February 27, 2020

When you go to a crusade or church service and hundreds of people give their lives to the Lord, you may start to wonder, what’s the secret sauce?  How did the evangelist or pastor do it?  Before you start to think it’s something mankind comes up with in their own strength, you need to hear what Acts chapter fourteen has to say.  Here on the Thursday edition of Sound Doctrine, pastor Jeff Johnson shows us what effective outreach looks like.

Today on Sound Doctrine we're observing God’s prescription for revival, which involves the Word and the Spirit.  Pastor Jeff will point out three results of revival.  The first is the Word is spread.

As Christians we long for a revival.  And we may wonder, will it happen?  How can it happen?  As we turn to Acts chapter thirteen today on Sound Doctrine we find God’s recipe for revival.  It’s as the Word goes forth, and God moves by His spirit, that revival happens.

We’ve read of some amazing revivals in the past from the Great Awakening, to the Welsh Revival.  And some of us can remember revivals taking place in our lifetime too, like what happened in the Jesus Movement.  But can it happen again?  It certainly can, and Acts thirteen points the way.  That’s where we’re headed today on Sound Doctrine.

I think you’d agree that this world is in desperate need of a revival.  But what is it going to take to get there?  Put simply, the Word Plus the Spirit, Equals Revival!  And that’s the message pastor Jeff Johnson will seek to drive home today through his study in Acts thirteen.

In Acts thirteen God is sending a new breed of missionaries out into the world, from Antioch.  And we’re hearing all about their missionary endeavors, which included Paul’s first recorded sermon in a Jewish Synagogue.  In it Paul shares a history lesson, focusing on the one true God, and His divine government!  It’s a history lesson from David to Jesus.

You may have slept through history class back in High School or College, but today on Sound Doctrine we’re given a history lesson that will no doubt capture your attention, as it did for the Jews that received it so long ago.  Today we take another look at Paul’s first recorded sermon in Acts thirteen.  He’s talking to his fellow Jews, recalling their history.

God wants you to share what He’s done in your life and give out the gospel message that you’ve received.  We see that played out in the life of the apostle Paul in Acts thirteen, as a new breed of missionary is revealed.  Today on Sound Doctrine pastor Jeff Johnson looks at Paul’s first recorded sermon, and the first part of it was preparation!

What makes a good sermon? I think you’d agree there needs to be teaching from the Bible, and it would be a good idea to include the Gospel message too! Paul’s first recorded sermon features just that. It’s a survey of the Old and New Testaments up until that point in time, and also he emphasized the Gospel. It’s a powerful sermon and one we’ll look at today with Pastor Jeff.

God wants to lead and direct our lives through the Holy Spirit, and as we’re faithful to share the Gospel with others, amazing things can happen! We’ll hear of one great example of that today as we open our Bibles to Acts thirteen. Paul shares the good news, and after some opposition, the guy gets saved. Let’s be encouraged by this glorious work of the Spirit.
