The Power of Blindness Part 2

February 13, 2020

God wants to lead and direct our lives through the Holy Spirit, and as we’re faithful to share the Gospel with others, amazing things can happen! We’ll hear of one great example of that today as we open our Bibles to Acts thirteen. Paul shares the good news, and after some opposition, the guy gets saved. Let’s be encouraged by this glorious work of the Spirit.

We’re in the middle of a study in Acts. And here in chapter thirteen we’re spotlighting the work of the Holy Spirit. We’re about to see how the Spirit was greatly involved in saving a man, on the heels of a mighty miracle! There’s nothing more beautiful than a lost sinner, turning to Jesus, and that’s what we find in verses eleven to thirteen.

Have you ever been right in the middle of a work of God, and then you’re hit with fierce opposition? It’s actually a common experience, and something the apostle Paul dealt with too. Join us and see how the Holy Spirit would help him through that!

Imagine sharing Christ with someone who’s interested in what you have to say, then all of a sudden another person interrupts and opposes you! That’s exactly what happened to the apostle Paul, as we’ll hear today on Sound Doctrine through a study of Acts thirteen. In this case, the disruption came from a sorcerer.

We’ll be in Acts chapter thirteen today. God has just put together a missionary team to go into all the world and preach the gospel.  While they would have a helper in the Holy Spirit, there was also great opposition.  The same holds true for us today, as we go out into the world.

As we delve further into Acts chapter thirteen, we’re following Paul and Barnabas on their first missionary journey.  You might think of it as a journal of their fascinating trip. God may or may not call you to leave your home and go to a foreign land, but you’re to be a missionary wherever that may be.  And like these saints of old, God wants to prepare and empower us to succeed.

We return to the book of Acts here on Sound Doctrine.  Chapter thirteen describes the work of the Holy Spirit.  We’re told He has come to guide and teach us… often through gifted individuals.  Pastor Jeff Johnson is going to give attention specifically to the gifts of prophecy and teaching and how it’s to be exercised, as well as received.

As we visit Acts chapter thirteen, our focus shifts to the work of the Holy Spirit. We’ll notice that part of that work involves gifts that God gives to the church today.  Gifts like prophecy and teaching.  Perhaps we’ll be covering a gift you’ve been given?  Let’s see how to use it for the glory of God today on Sound Doctrine.

As we go about our Christian pilgrimage we’re not only indwelt by the Holy Spirit, but we’re to be directed by the Spirit too.  Have you ever wondered how He does that?  We get a good picture of that in the church of Antioch, described for us in Acts thirteen.  Just as the Spirit directed this first century church, He wants to direct our lives too.

If you need a good example of the foolishness of going against God, and seeking the glory that belongs only to Him, just look at the life of Herod.  He had a tragic ending, as he was eaten by worms and died. Today on Sound Doctrine pastor Jeff Johnson recalls this story from Acts twelve, and shows us three worms that can easily devour us today if we’re not careful.
