Needed for Today: Humility and Resistance Part 2

May 5, 2021

Many people today worry about things that will never happen.  Some are anxious about things that happened in the past that can’t be changed.  What are you worried or concerned about today? Maybe it’s a fear of losing your job or getting the coronavirus?  Pastor Jeff Johnson is about to encourage us to cast those cares upon the Lord and leave them there.

In Proverbs 8:13, we read, “To fear the Lord is to hate evil: I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech.”  This is just one of many places in Scripture where God makes it clear what He thinks of pride.  He resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.  We’re going to take notice of two things we need in our lives, through a study of First Peter five.  Pastor Jeff Johnson says it’s Humility and Resistance.

First Peter chapter five is before us today on Sound Doctrine.  It’s a wonderful passage pastors and leaders should take to heart, and frame their ministry around.  It’ll help them steer clear of the wrong attitude and action, and be a God-honoring leader instead!

Have you ever noticed that your field of vision actually narrows under stress?  Law Enforcement officers would be quick to tell you that.  Spiritually speaking during seasons of suffering we’re prone to lose perspective.  And that’s actually the time we need it the most.  Pastor Jeff Johnson will show us how to maintain perspective for seasons of suffering and how to navigate through trials today.

Today we’re going to take notice of what God looks for in a leader.  Whether you’re a pastor, an elder, or a small group leader in the church this is valuable encouragement to receive and apply here in First Peter!

The plan today on Sound Doctrine is to polish off First Peter chapter four and the subject at hand is suffering. It’s a fitting topic for us in light of what we’ve been through recently.  The hardship we face takes on a whole new light when you know that God is using it for good. But it’s a lesson we each must learn for ourselves.

Someone has said “if you’re going through a difficult time keep going. Even the darkest hour still has only sixty minutes.”  It’s easier said than done. And not to trivialize any suffering you’re facing but our aim is only to reassure you there’s hope and encouragement to be found in God’s Word, specifically First Peter.  And that’s where we join pastor Jeff Johnson today on Sound Doctrine.

When going through a trial do you think as so many do, “Why in the world is this happening to me!”  It’s a common reaction these days.  We may think it’s strange, or that we’ve done something wrong for this to happen.  First Peter chapter four reminds us that God allows Christians to suffer, and He wants us to be a witness as we do.

When a trial strikes, or we’re in the midst of tribulation, it’s easy to think something is wrong or that God must be mad at us!  But today we learn that in this world we’re going to suffer and experience tribulation!  And God can actually use you as a witness as you do suffer.

We take you up to two mountaintops today on Sound Doctrine.  Mount Calvary and the Mount of Olives.  One is suffering and the other glory!  As followers of Christ we can expect both.  Yes we will suffer, but we can also expect a resurrection that leads to glory.

When going through a trial do you think as so many do, “Why in the world is this happening to me!”  It’s a common reaction.  We may think it’s strange, or that we’ve done something wrong for this to happen.  First Peter four reminds us that God allows Christians to suffer…. Even when they’re living a godly life.  Today on Sound Doctrine we’ll learn how to occupy until Jesus comes, and arrive at a balanced life, even in difficult times.
