Living in His Presence Part 2

When you give- who’s approval and applause are you seeking? Man’s or God’s? We’ll allow that penetrating question to examine our own hearts today on Sound Doctrine. Today we’ll be covering the first few verses of Matthew six. Throughout the Scriptures we’re encouraged to give. But as we’ll see in our study today, Jesus has His eye on more than just our outward actions. He’s also concerned with why we’re doing what we’re doing, and even how we do it! Here’s our teacher, pastor Jeff Johnson focusing on how we’re to live righteously.

We’ve reached Matthew chapter six today where you could say we’ve entered a practical portion of Scripture. We’ll be talking about practicing righteousness, and practicing the presence of God. For some it’s comforting to realize God is with me at all times, and to others it makes them uneasy!

Loving those that love you… no biggie! Loving your enemies and doing good to them, pray for them… well now that seems like a tall order. What may seem impossible to us, is made possible as we walk in the Spirit. Today on Sound Doctrine we’ll discover that this Kingdom living is possible by the power of God living within us. We’re making our way through the Sermon on the Mount, and we aim to complete chapter five today.

We’re told in Scripture to expect persecution, and we’ll be hated and mistreated even as Jesus was. But how do we treat those we might classify as an enemy? We’re about to find out on Sound Doctrine as we turn back to the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew chapter five. Jesus is about to tell us to love, bless and pray for them! Overcome evil with good. Let’s be encouraged in that direction as we present part two of, “Kingdom Living!”

We’ve all been hurt by the words of actions of another, and it’s about that time thoughts of retaliation my come to mind. "Get em back for what they’ve done to you," some would tell us. But Jesus would have us go in a much different direction. Turn with us to Matthew chapter five, and verses thirty-eight through forty-two as we learn more about Kingdom Living on Sound Doctrine.

God has made it possible to come clean and receive forgiveness. He loves us so much that He sent His son to die for our sins so that we wouldn’t have to die in our sins. With that great truth in mind, why wouldn’t we be willing to simply receive forgiveness.... and forgive others?

Somebody does you wrong, is the first thought through your mind, “Oooh they’re gonna get it!” The world would have you believe, you have every right to retaliate! But God would have us go in another direction. On today’s Sound Doctrine pastor Jeff Johnson contrasts the world’s way of thinking to what Jesus said in the Sermon on the Mount - “Turn the other cheek”. There is a lot of confusion about this radical teaching and in a moment - we’ll join pastor Jeff who will show us what Jesus was really saying. Join us in Matthew five.

From the dad who promises his kids he’d take them to the ballgame and doesn’t, to the couple that vows from death do us part but ends up divorcing… many people today don’t take promises or vows seriously. God certainly does as we’ll hear today on Sound Doctrine. We’ll hear that it’s important to do what we say we’ll do, and follow through with our vows. If we can’t do that, don’t swear to begin with! People give all sorts of reasons for divorce, from a love grown cold, to no longer being happy, or marital infidelity! And divorce is occurring at an alarming rate in our world today… even in the church! As shocking as that is and as rampant as divorce is in our generation - divorce was commonplace in Jesus’ day too. And the Lord taught on the subject in His Sermon on the Mount. Today on Sound Doctrine, we’ll hear what He has to say.

Marriage is sacred and something God created with a purpose in mind. He put it together and wants it to stay together for a lifetime. It’s not hard to see a growing number of marriages today are ending in divorce! The Lord actually spoke quite a bit about it in His Word as you’ll hear on Sound Doctrine. We’ll be camping out in Matthew chapter five and verses thirty-one and thirty-two.
