An Effective Church (Part 2) - Episode 4

September 26, 2019

It’s been said that the church once sang, “Standing on the promises,” but lately it looks more like they’re simply, “sitting on the premises.” And as we look at the keys to being An Effective church, Pastor Jeff is quick to show how the church at large is ineffective when she is being complacent or apathetic. This marks our fourth and final study in our series. We encourage you to pick up your very own copy so that these principles of being an effective witness can be yours as well. Details are available at the end of the message. Until then, join us in Acts 5 with Pastor Jeff for our time in Sound Doctrine.

As we finish our study of “An Effective Church, Part 2” Pastor Jeff helps us to see a contrast of two Pharisees. One was Nicodemus who came to Jesus seeking the truth, and Gamaliel, who was widely respected, but he wanted to defer or avoid the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Pastor Jeff says that while his words have a form of wisdom in letting the church situation play out, they don’t offer any real leadership when it is needed most. We draw your attention to Acts 5:34 as we finish our series titled, “An Effective Church, Part 2” in our time in Sound Doctrine.

When it comes to success in the Christian life, what does that look like? And who hold the ultimate definition? As we look to the word, Pastor Jeff Johnson takes us to the book of Acts where he helps us to see where phrases like witness, dying to self come from, and their meaning and application for today. God wants us to know what He has given to us to follow Him and how others are supposed to come to know Him. So join Pastor Jeff in Acts 5 for our study titled, “An Effective Church Pt. 2” for an encouraging time in Sound Doctrine.

When it comes to being successful or effective, what are the key elements? In the world, it means fulfilling your job description, or advancing the company’s goals. When it comes to being a Christian, Pastor Jeff shows us how to follow God’s ways in walking with Him. In doing so, we discover that we need the filling and power of God’s Spirit flowing through our lives. As we look at the early church, Pastor Jeff shows how the believers in the early church used their gifts, God’s Word, and a bold witness so others would hear the Gospel. With more on that, let’s join Pastor Jeff in Acts 5 for our study titled, “An Effective Church, Pt. 2”

Sink or swim. We’ve heard the phrase in many different contexts. But no matter what the context, the meaning is the same. If we don’t maintain an active participation in whatever we’re a part of, we will soon drown. Pastor Jeff says in a similar way this can be applied to being a Christian. If we simply take for granted what God has given us in Jesus Christ, without growing or sharing, we will soon find that go from not only being ineffective, but soon after languishing just to walk with the Lord. It’s a cautionary tale taken from our study titled, “An Effective Church.” With more on that, let’s join Pastor Jeff in Acts 5 for our time in Sound Doctrine.

When it comes to being an effective witness for the Lord, it is important that we are with the Lord. Too often within the church there is an epidemic of those who do many things in the name of Jesus without doing many of those things with Jesus. There is no filling of His Spirit and consequently no spiritual power. Pastor Jeff gives insight into what many believers and fellowships lack when it comes to the disconnect between the early church and many churches today. He outlines some key principles for being an effective in these last days. So join us in Acts 5 for our study titled, “An Effective Church,” with Pastor Jeff Johnson.

Being a Christian means you never know when, how, or where you will be called by God to be a witness for the Lord. You’ll never know when that moment will come tell others about the Lord. Many times we only imagine ourselves sharing about Jesus in a peaceful or positive context. However, that’s the case with the study we have before us. As Pastor Jeff takes us to the apostles on trial, he outlines the necessity of boldness in standing up for the Lord to powerful religious leaders. We invite you to join us in Acts 5 for our study titled, “An Effective Church” with Pastor Jeff for our time in Sound Doctrine.

The Bible says of the law of the LORD that it is pure, giving insight for life. As the early church experienced the discipline of the Lord, the fear of the Lord and the working of miracles followed the purifying that was taking place as the Word of God was preached among the people of Jerusalem. And those who opposed the work of God discovered that they couldn’t withstand the word of God as the words of life, joy and victory in Christ were being shared. Pastor Jeff helps us to see the impact of purity working through the church as it did in our study. With Part 2 of Discipline Brings Purity and Power, let’s join Pastor Jeff in Acts 5.

With every deliverance there comes a duty. Whenever God sets us free from something there is some lesson learned that needs to be kept, or there is someone who needs to hear about the saving work of Jesus Christ. As we see in many believer’s imprisonment through the book of Acts, God delivered them and they shared His message or in response to prayers to the Lord for their deliverance. Pastor Jeff shows how each of these extreme circumstances were used by God for His glory when God’s people were surrendered to Him. With more on our study titled, “Discipline Brings Purity and Power Part 2,” let’s join Pastor Jeff in Acts 5 for our study in Sound Doctrine.

Like it or not, but there are times when pain is actually used to purify. While we choose to seek a lifestyle of ease and comfort, God will often sacrifice our comfort to improve our character. As we begin to look at the trials that the disciples went through we recognize that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God and are the called according to His purpose. Pastor Jeff continues to glean valuable spiritual principles from the discipline of God to those whom He loves. It gives comfort to know that the difficulties we experience are not for nothing in the Lord’s economy. With more on that, let’s join Pastor Jeff in Acts 5 for our encouragement in Sound Doctrine.

Two of the most common responses to God’s discipline is to be discouraged or to despise it. As we have been looking at the discipline of some members in the early church, we notice what Satan intended to do through them, and what God ultimately did with the fellowship through this. It’s an object lesson to all believers to walk in the fear of the Lord, but also to be aware of the tactics of the enemy of our souls. Pastor Jeff concludes our series by helping us to see his endgame for each believer. With that in mind, let’s join Pastor Jeff in Acts 5 for our time in Sound Doctrine.
