March 6, 2024

As we head back to Matthew chapter five and our study in the Sermon on the Mount, remember Jesus is really getting to the heart of the matter, revealing the inward attitudes and motives of the heart.  Today we’ll receive some wonderful principles to live by, but pastor Jeff Johnson cautions us be careful that you don’t take things too far and become like the Pharisees!

The religions of the world very often focus on outward actions, but Jesus in His Sermon on the Mount deals with inward attitudes.  He explains how righteousness is obtained, and that the life of the Christian is not an outward show but an inward reality.  Today on Sound Doctrine we’ll talk about Actions and Attitudes as we approach Matthew chapter five, verses 21-26.

We’re making our way through Matthew with pastor Jeff Johnson.  Some would have us believe that we need to do enough good works to earn our salvation, but the truth of the matter as we’ll see today, is a relationship with Jesus is the ticket.  With that said, the law does serve an important purpose and it was fulfilled in Christ. We'll spend some time talking about that, as we join pastor Jeff in Matthew chapter five.

In light of all that you’ve said and done, do ever feel unlovable?  Unworthy of love?  Here’s some good news… God loves you in spite of all of that, and He proved it at the cross.  Today on Sound Doctrine we’ll be encouraged to follow His example by walking in light and love.  God wants to spread His love around through us.

Ephesians 2:8-9 says, “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith- and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.  Not by works, so that no one can boast!”  That sure makes it clear, we’re saved by grace and not by trying to live up to the standard of the law.  But does that mean the law of God is unnecessary?  Today on Sound Doctrine we learn that Jesus didn’t come to destroy the law, but rather fulfill it!  But what should our response to the law be?  Find out today.

Today pastor Jeff resumes our study of the Sermon on the Mount.  Today we’re learning what we’re to be like in these last days.  Jesus summed it up perfectly… we’re to be both salt and light.  Salt is what we are… we cause a thirst.  Light is what we do… we shine!

As the world goes from bad to worse, the Christian is to be a preserving influence.  A light in a dark world.  Question is are you just going with the flow of this world, or are you truly salt and light as you should be?  Today on Sound Doctrine we’ll learn a thing or two about what we’re to be like in these difficult days.

In Matthew chapter five we receive eight beatitudes from Jesus.  You might think of these as characteristics or marks of the Christian.  And the final one has to do with rejoicing in tribulation.  How is that even possible, you might be wondering?  We might tend to gravitate toward retaliation and bitterness at such times.  Pastor Jeff will suggest a heavenly mindset will help you arrive at a Christ-like response.

Persecution and tribulation, it’s to be expected in the Christian life.  And maybe when it hits you get down and discouraged!  But today on Sound Doctrine we’ll learn how it’s possible to actually rejoice in the midst of it all!  When you have the eternal perspective it makes all the difference.  Pastor Jeff Johnson is making his way through Matthew’s gospel, and we’re at the tail-end of the beatitudes in chapter five.

We hear a lot about love these days, and while many view it merely as a warm gushy feeling that comes and goes on a moment’s notice, the Bible portrays it in a far different light!  Today on Sound Doctrine we go deeper into First John chapter two, and deal with a couple of verses that speak volumes about God’s love and how it motivates us to obey His commands and steer clear of sin.

When we’re living for Jesus, we can expect to be treated as Jesus was.  That means we’ll be persecuted and even hated at times.  Maybe we’re not invited to all the parties, or we’re ridiculed on social media, or worse yet we lose our very own lives.  But there’s also a blessing to be experienced, for those that are persecuted for righteousness sake.
