It happens again and again: a child at death's door...urgent prayer...the child dies anyway. Where was God? When prayer is not answered as we'd like, many simply give up and stop praying. We may question God's promises, his intentions, or even his character. If your prayers seem to bounce off the ceiling, you need to stay tuned for the next several weeks.

Some philosophers see both good and evil in human nature. For them, the side that wins is determined by our environment. As much as we'd like to take credit for being basically nice people, only the new life implanted by God in the new birth can take a bad man and make him good. Then our new desires for righteousness will spring forth in any environment.

John Newton wrote about "Amazing Grace that saved a wretch like me." We like the song, but we're not so sure about that "wretch" part. Fact is, we can't win in life's race without agreeing with God about our basic condition. We need His grace, not to supplement our goodness, but to save us from our depravity.

After the terrorist attack on 9-11, even liberal philosophers acknowledged the presence of evil in human nature. No one doubts it's there. The question is how to deal with it. Some say "seek enlightenment." The Bible says "come to Christ for salvation." Today: why only divine intervention can turn an evil man toward God.

Many philosophers see a dual nature in mankind: good and evil coexisting, and fighting for ultimate control. The Bible paints a different picture: one of a basic depravity that can only be remedied by the grace of God through Christ. Today: a big picture view of who we are, and how we can be made good in the eyes of God.

Surgeons have to cut to heal. And coming clean with God may mean some pain. Making past wrongs right can't be avoided. Imagine running, free of a guilty conscience, heading full speed toward your heavenly goal. Now that's a prize worth the pain, as you experience "The Healing Power of the Light."

We like to think of ourselves as basically good people who make mistakes, not as sinners desperately needing the grace of God. But to run life's race well, we need to acknowledge the truth about ourselves. We have hearts that are desperately wicked. Today: teaching from First John to shed light on the darkness that's within each of us. Please listen with us.

Under cover of darkness, criminals steal and destroy. We speak of "bringing their deeds to light" as they face justice. The light cuts the darkness like a knife. It reveals our hearts the way they really are. Today, let the light of God's word cut through your illusions and show you what God sees when He peers into your soul. Please listen with us.

Behind a façade of spiritual leadership, prominent Christians can become control freaks, doing much damage to the kingdom. Like King Saul of old, these people forget that God is ultimately in charge. Today: lessons from the Bible on the dangers of holding on too tightly to what we may see as ours. This may hit close to home, so please, please listen with us.
