Dr. Erwin W. Lutzer

Judging Neo-Paganism #1 of 3

TV and the movies treat the supernatural as a world of fantasy. We don’t take the occult seriously, since it entertains us. But demonic influence is very real, it’s enshrined in modern philosophies as well as in the media: music, TV, and the movies. As believers running the race of the Christian life, we must understand what we are facing, and how to deal with it.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. Some people spend thousands of dollars and endure multiple plastic surgeries to improve their looks, and enhance their self-images. In the race of life, many people don’t accept themselves as clay on the potter’s wheel of God. They become slaves to their peers, who value appearances. But you can see yourself as a unique creation of God, and then live in freedom.

From the day of our birth, each of us is conditioned to value physical appearance as the great “gold coin of human worth.” Let’s face it: cute babies get photographed, attractive girls get dates, good looking men get promoted. And Erwin Lutzer says he’s declaring war on this false standard with us.

One look at the glamour on TV and it’s clear: life at its best is reserved for “beautiful people”….people unlike you or me. The price tags have been switched, and now many assess their value based on how they look. This distorted view of self is damaging, especially to young people. So, how do we as Christians counteract it?

Hollywood has successfully infiltrated the hearts and minds of untold millions of people through TV, movies, and pop music. Many believers have stumbled in the race of life as they have taken in values opposed to the word of God through their entertainment.   It is high time for all of us to get back on track. Today we hear some final thoughts on how we are to evaluate what enters our eye-gates and ear-gates.

At no time in history has the entertainment culture invaded the church more than it has today. How should a Christian respond? The world is heading into a deeper moral chasm with almost every new film, song, and TV show. Even many entertainers decry today’s music and movies as empty of value. But as believers, we’re called to a higher standard.

No one hears the church’s outcry on the filth seen on TV and the movies, since the church is watching like everybody else. As the entertainment industry sinks to baser levels every day, more people become addicted to behaviors that God hates. Sadly, too many believers are indulging in the same excesses as their unsaved neighbors. So what can be done?

It’s amazing -- you can scan over a hundred channels of cable TV and then realize that there’s nothing on worth watching. Entertainment has sunk to new lows.  To a large degree, movies, music and TV are fast becoming a wasteland. How can a Christian discern what to watch or what to listen to?

Moses turned the Nile into blood. Pharaoh’s magicians did the same. Satan often duplicates the miracles of God. As we run life’s race, how can we discern where a miracle comes from? And if it does come from God, what’s the purpose of a miracle?   Does God owe us a miracle if we want one? For some answers from the Bible, please listen.

Signs and wonders always attract attention. But few take notice when a man or woman finds salvation through Christ. Where is God’s power most clearly seen? In a healed tumor, or in a life changed from the inside out? Those with discerning hearts know that the power of the gospel far outweighs the power seen in miracles, signs and wonders.
