Judging Miracles #3 of 3

June 11, 2010
Moses turned the Nile into blood. Pharaoh’s magicians did the same. Satan often duplicates the miracles of God. As we run life’s race, how can we discern where a miracle comes from? And if it does come from God, what’s the purpose of a miracle?   Does God owe us a miracle if we want one? For some answers from the Bible, please listen.

Signs and wonders always attract attention. But few take notice when a man or woman finds salvation through Christ. Where is God’s power most clearly seen? In a healed tumor, or in a life changed from the inside out? Those with discerning hearts know that the power of the gospel far outweighs the power seen in miracles, signs and wonders.

In some cities, you can attend a miracle healing service almost any night, or see one on cable TV during the day. Miracles seem to be everywhere. Almost everybody wants one. Whose heart isn’t moved by seeing someone in a wheelchair desperate to walk again? But could those so-called miracles really be a form of demonic deception?

A common theme in cults is the cult leader’s total control of his people. False prophets need that sense of power. Unfortunately, false prophets inhabit the church as well as cults. As we run the race of life, it’s time to escape the clutches of controlling leaders. Today we will hear an expose’ of the tricks these people use to manipulate those who follow them.

“All that glitters is not gold.” That’s especially true of false teaching. Our task is to discern the genuine article. We need to avoid the rabbit-trails of error as we run the race of life. That means detecting and rejecting false prophets who offer another “gospel”, which is really no gospel at all Today we learn how to spot these wolves in sheep’s clothing.

In both Testaments, the Bible has a lot to say about false prophets. Most of it is bad news for prophet and follower alike. Modern-day false prophets promise blessing without repentance, and prosperity for all who send a gift. Some TV preachers exploit the vulnerable and lead many astray. Today we learn how to tell when teaching is off the mark, and error has replaced truth.

In a time when people won’t endure sound doctrine, it’s no great surprise to see so many false prophets on the airwaves. Television: it sells people what they want to buy. Some programmers use it to sell false doctrines and millions are eating it up. Today we learn how a discerning believer can and must separate truth from error when listening to teaching on TV.

There is no doctrine more important than the doctrine of salvation. Without it, we face a cold, dark, eternity. There is no room for error or opinion when your soul is at stake. What you and I need is the truth, and nothing but the truth. Today we look at the core components of the gospel, and why any teaching that omits them or distorts them is heresy.

Sound doctrine is what we need. Sadly, it’s in short supply from many modern-day prophets on religious television. Confusion over doctrine throws many people off the track in the race of life. They send money to those requiring money for the promise of financial freedom. Words of knowledge replace words from the Bible. Today we will learn how to discern false teaching.

If you watch enough religious cable TV, you'll be totally confused about which doctrines are true and which are false. In the marketplace of religious ideas, packaging and glitz often carry more weight than Bible truth. Today: you'll hear a pointed call to return to a standard against which doctrines must be measured, doctrines that impact your eternal destiny.

Cultural distinctives...music styles...food...we're quick to judge one another on matters that are not central to our faith. The race of life is tough enough without being called to task by another Christian for something the Bible is silent about. Today: learning to discern the difference between core principles and personal preferences to avoid judging others needlessly.
