Judging Conduct #2 of 3

June 30, 2010
Think about this: is it ever OK for one Christian’s personal conviction to become another Christian’s rule of behavior? Running life’s race is easier when we’re guided by principles rather than rules. Today, we’ll find those principles in the Bible: principles to help us judge conduct: that of others, and more importantly, that of ourselves.

Many people spend more time planning for a vacation than preparing for eternity. Perhaps it doesn't seem real that we will still exist—fully conscious and alive—beyond the grave. But it's true, and it calls for careful consideration. In this updated edition of One Minute After You Die, bestselling author Erwin Lutzer urges readers to study what the Bible says. Can near-death experiences teach us anything about life after death? How can we prepare for our own final moment? With 700,000 copies in print, this bestselling work makes an encouraging gift for believers and a tasteful word of caution for the undecided. Some Christians have strong rules of behavior: no movies, no dancing, and so on. Others have no rules. Who’s right? Many running life’s race are tripped up by the conduct of believers around them, conduct they feel is inappropriate for a Christian. How should we judge the behavior of others when our upbringing says what they’re doing is wrong?

People are fascinated by stories of the supernatural: tales of spirits, ghosts, unseen powers, and how to obtain them. There’s major money to be made in writing stories like these, as evidenced by the Harry Potter series, very successful in print and on the silver screen. Should Christians line up to buy books like these, or, should they take a second look?

Satan’s power is very real. His forces are quick to take advantage when we fail to guard the doorways of our lives. As we run the race of life, there is an unseen spirit world running as well. Demons try to subvert the purposes of God in every believer’s life. Our task: to discern the danger, and avoid opening the many doors that lead there.

TV and the movies treat the supernatural as a world of fantasy. We don’t take the occult seriously, since it entertains us. But demonic influence is very real, it’s enshrined in modern philosophies as well as in the media: music, TV, and the movies. As believers running the race of the Christian life, we must understand what we are facing, and how to deal with it.

When you see your body as your own property, you do with it as you please, even damaging it just to be accepted by others. But when you see your body as God’s property, everything changes. Gone is the mad rush to make improvements the Designer never intended. Also gone is the desire to alter your body in destructive ways.   To learn more about whose body it is you’re walking around in, stay with us.

Some people spend thousands of dollars and endure multiple plastic surgeries to improve their looks, and enhance their self-images. In the race of life, many people don’t accept themselves as clay on the potter’s wheel of God. They become slaves to their peers, who value appearances. But you can see yourself as a unique creation of God, and then live in freedom.

From the day of our birth, each of us is conditioned to value physical appearance as the great “gold coin of human worth.” Let’s face it: cute babies get photographed, attractive girls get dates, good looking men get promoted. And Erwin Lutzer says he’s declaring war on this false standard with us.

One look at the glamour on TV and it’s clear: life at its best is reserved for “beautiful people”….people unlike you or me. The price tags have been switched, and now many assess their value based on how they look. This distorted view of self is damaging, especially to young people. So, how do we as Christians counteract it?

Hollywood has successfully infiltrated the hearts and minds of untold millions of people through TV, movies, and pop music. Many believers have stumbled in the race of life as they have taken in values opposed to the word of God through their entertainment.   It is high time for all of us to get back on track. Today we hear some final thoughts on how we are to evaluate what enters our eye-gates and ear-gates.

At no time in history has the entertainment culture invaded the church more than it has today. How should a Christian respond? The world is heading into a deeper moral chasm with almost every new film, song, and TV show. Even many entertainers decry today’s music and movies as empty of value. But as believers, we’re called to a higher standard.
