An Extraordinary Authority #2 of 3

March 17, 2009
Some celebrity athletes talk big, but when their performance lags behind their egos, they're not taken seriously anymore. Real authority flows from who you are, not how loud you can talk. Jesus Christ had an authority unmatched by any man who has ever lived. Today: more evidence of an authority that demands our response.

When you size up any group of people, it's easy to tell who's in charge...there's something intangible about real leaders. In all of history, no one has ever projected the authority that Jesus had. People were either drawn to Him, or, they wanted to kill Him. For anyone confronting the real Jesus, there was, and still is, no middle ground, and today we'll see why.

In an Olympic race, you either win, or lose. Coming in fourth is like bringing up the rear. The same is true in the spiritual realm. All of us are either winning or losing eternally. And our relationships with Christ determine where those future ages will be spent. He made claims no other man has ever made, and backed them up with incontrovertible miracles. Stay with us.

People once thought that running a four-minute mile would take a miracle. Well, one day, someone did it, it's no longer a miracle. Real miracles include raising the dead, and feeding the five thousand...the kind of miracles Jesus did to prove He came from God. Today: more about the amazing life of Christ, a man whose claims were validated by His miracles.

We all cheer when an athlete suffers a serious injury, and later, gets back in the game. That's called a "miracle comeback." But for real miracles, we need to look to Jesus Christ, who demonstrated authority over nature itself in the amazing deeds He performed. Today: why miracles were the evidence that Jesus was, and is, the Son of God.

He never wrote a book, never owned a home, He never traveled extensively. Still today, He's the centerpiece of the human race. Jesus Christ lived a perfect life and died a perfect sacrifice. Not even His enemies could point to a single character flaw. He is worthy of our absolute obedience, since He is the only mediator between God and humanity.

An Olympic track judge has to be above reproach. Otherwise, no one would trust him to adjudicate a gold medal race. In matters of faith, a Savior has to be sinless to be a sacrifice for our sins. Christ was sinless, something no other prophet or guru has ever claimed. Since sinful men and women bear sinful children, Christ's birth had to be different.

There are many things that set Christ apart from all others who claim to point the way to God. His supernatural birth is one. Jesus was fully human, but had no earthly father. Born to a young Jewish maiden who had never known a man, His beginnings on earth were indeed extraordinary. So: just how important is the virgin birth?

Everyone likes a story of rags-to-riches. But for Jesus, taking on human flesh means His story is riches to rags. The Son of God's arrival in Bethlehem fulfilled countless prophecies and drew the attention of legions of angels. There's a good reason why our calendars pivot from BC to AD at the time of His birth. For the details, stay with us.

You can't take home Olympic gold without conforming to the rules of the race. Only one route leads to the finish line. And you can't get to heaven by picking out your own religion as you might pick out a new coat. Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth and the life. No man comes to the Father except through me." If this sounds intolerant to you, please stay with us.

When Rick Warren was announced as one praying at President Obama's inauguration, an immediate and shrill cry arose. "What if he invokes the name of Jesus?" That was the great fear among the enlightened media. These days, God is OK...maybe. But Jesus? No, He's off-limits for public events. The one who said He was the truth still divides humanity right down the middle.
