When the Answer is Delayed Part 2

April 14, 2015

Abraham never saw the fulfillment of God’s promises to him. In that light, who are we to complain when our prayers are not answered right away? Today, we’ll gain a larger perspective on prayer, which many of us perhaps never had.

The Eclipse Of God
Just as the moon obscures the sun’s light during an eclipse, today’s radical secularism has obscured the light of God. But God’s light still shines—and He is calling us to shine His light in our growing darkness. Is God more tolerant than He used to be? Pastor Lutzer shows how God is both a God of wrath as well as grace; that He is both merciful and just, and both a redeemer and a judge. Deepen your love for our unchangeable God of the Bible and be empowered to proclaim the light of truth in a culture of darkness. When we pray for something, we hope for a quick response from God. But God has His own clock, which is not always in sync with ours. How do we handle prayers that, to us, are time critical, when the answers seem to be anything but?

Someone has said, “Pressure produces.” It’s when we’re suffering that God refines our character, and that’s more important than Him answering our prayers when we think He should. Unanswered prayers and suffering form in us the quality of endurance.

When the answers to our prayers don’t come on our schedule, many of us lose heart. But the Bible says that trials and suffering produce endurance, a quality with which God is very pleased. Here are more lessons on what to do “When the Promises Don’t Work.”

It happens again and again: a child dies even after we pray. Where was God? Many react by giving up prayer, questioning God’s promises, intentions, and character. Do your prayers seem to bounce off the ceiling too?

Paul said that Jesus was “declared to be the Son of God with power....by the resurrection from the dead.” If we trust Christ for salvation, that empty tomb in Jerusalem is a promise that our tombs will one day be empty as well.

Death is everyone’s unavoidable fate, due to the legacy of the sins committed by Adam and Eve. But believers cling to the promise of Jesus, “I am the resurrection and the life…he that believes in Me, though he may die, yet shall he live.”

Jesus faced untold agony in a place called Gethsemane. Knowing what awaited Him, and praying until blood drops hit the ground, He finally said to His Father, “Not my will, but Thine be done.” The great transaction would now take place.

Gethsemane lies on the Mount of Olives facing the Old City of Jerusalem. Here, Jesus spent a night in agonized prayer before being nailed to a cross outside the city wall. His task: to drink the cup of suffering for you and for me. What does this mean?
April 2, 2015
The legacy we inherit from our Master includes suffering. To walk with Jesus means that we must walk with Him in Gethsemane. Here a decision was reached that made salvation possible for billions of believers yet to be born.

It’s one thing to have strong faith in God when the sun’s shining. It’s quite another when dark storms strike. A boat loaded with prisoners were sailing to Rome when their vessel sank in gale force winds. And had it not been for the courage of Paul, also a prisoner, all would have been lost.
