When Jesus Observes Our Hearts Part 1

April 18, 2013

Some Bible scholars see a progression as Jesus evaluates seven successive churches in the book of Revelation. They see the passing of history, with each church representing an era of time. If this is the case, we may be living in the last era—part of a church Jesus says He will spew out of his mouth. Is your church spiritually hot, or, like the one at Laodicea, merely lukewarm?

One Minute After You Die
Many people spend more time planning for a vacation than preparing for eternity. Perhaps it doesn't seem real that we will still exist—fully conscious and alive—beyond the grave. But it's true, and it calls for careful consideration. In this updated edition of One Minute After You Die, bestselling author Erwin Lutzer urges readers to study what the Bible says. Can near-death experiences teach us anything about life after death? How can we prepare for our own final moment? With 700,000 copies in print, this bestselling work makes an encouraging gift for believers and a tasteful word of caution for the undecided. When churches check themselves against those listed in Revelation 2 and 3, there’s one church they want to be like. The church at Philadelphia earned high marks from Jesus for its faithfulness and its vision. They persevered, they kept His Word, and they never denied His name. Take a look at the importance of vision, and going through the open doors Jesus sets before us.

In what is now Turkey, the ancient church at Philadelphia earned a commendation from Jesus for its faithfulness to His name. In today’s world, faithful churches are growing even in hostile places—churches about which Jesus says, “I’ve set before you an open door, and no one can shut it.” Some even come to faith in Christ through dreams which lead them to seek out God’s Word.

Every Christian longs to hear “well done” when they stand before Jesus on Judgment day. The same applies to the local church. Jesus addressed seven churches in the book of Revelation, and often, His words were sharp. But there was one church that received a glowing review. Today, we’ll see why this church was praised, and how churches today can hear those same words of commendation from the Lord.

In the final analysis, it won’t matter whether you were rich or poor, famous or unknown. Only one thing will matter: whether you were an overcomer. Jesus makes that clear in His analysis of seven churches in the book of Revelation.  Those who overcome will be given white garments because Jesus will declare them worthy.

Jesus is quite clear about his expectations for every local church. “Be watchful…hold fast what you’ve heard…repent…or else I will come upon you as a thief…” Though He said these words to an ancient church, could He be saying them to your church or mine?

Self-delusion is easy. The addict says, “I can quit anytime,” and believes it. Some churches think all is well because great numbers convince them God is doing a mighty work. Today, we’ll visit an ancient church that Jesus proclaimed to be dead, even though it thought it was alive. Want a reality check for your church?  Stay with us.

The eyes of the risen Jesus are like a flame of fire. They see through our excuses and identify those who have “overcome.” Jesus mentions overcomers many times during his evaluations of seven ancient churches in the book of Revelation. Who they are and what they have overcome is our focus on today’s broadcast.

It takes a lot of gall to celebrate sin and encourage it within the church, and yet this is exactly what happened at Thyatira. Jesus singled it out for words of judgment in the book of Revelation. It had a false prophetess who advocated sexual immorality and idolatry. Today’s false prophets say they hear directly from God, but let’s hear what Jesus thinks.

Mention “holiness” to many people, and they immediately envision someone locked up in a monastery or perhaps a convent, but holiness really means being “set apart” or separated from sin and unto God. This standard is not an option for God’s children—He expects us to live pure lives. One of the seven churches Jesus addressed in Revelation was targeted for its failure to be holy.

Jesus never complained when He suffered. So why do we haul fellow believers into court when we think we’ve been cheated? Maybe it’s because we think we can get justice from unbelieving judges. In reality, God wants us to get our justice from His hand. It’s better to suffer a wrong than to tarnish the name of Jesus in a court of law.
