Dr. Erwin W. Lutzer

The Reformation - Prague

October 23, 2017

One hundred years before Martin Luther, John Hus took a stand for the gospel and the word of God. He paid for this stand with his life. In this message we learn the story of a great pre-reformer who paved the way for the Reformation to follow.

The Eclipse Of God
Just as the moon obscures the sun’s light during an eclipse, today’s radical secularism has obscured the light of God. But God’s light still shines—and He is calling us to shine His light in our growing darkness. Is God more tolerant than He used to be? Pastor Lutzer shows how God is both a God of wrath as well as grace; that He is both merciful and just, and both a redeemer and a judge. Deepen your love for our unchangeable God of the Bible and be empowered to proclaim the light of truth in a culture of darkness. Few among us are as thirsty for God as David was. Too many things fill our lives: entertainment, distractions, and the pressures of job and home. But when those things are taken away, our true hunger can be felt—a hunger that only God can satisfy.

David was a hunted man, chased among the rocks of the desert. He was a man who knew his only hope was in his God. David’s Psalms describe a man who learned to thirst for God like he thirsted for water. In this message we look at the ways God draws us to that kind of thirst.

The Apostle Paul said Jesus was “declared to be the Son of God in power... by his resurrection from the dead.” If we trust in Christ, the empty tomb in Jerusalem provides a promise that the tombs you and I shall occupy will one day be empty as well.

Death is everyone’s unavoidable fate, the legacy of the first sin committed by Adam and Eve. But believers cling to the promise of Jesus: “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live.”

Our aspirations as believers must pass through God’s hands. Jesus faced untold agony in Gethsemane. He knew what awaited Him, and he prayed until blood drops hit the ground. Most importantly, He said to His Father, “Not my will, but Thine be done.”

Gethsemane lies on the Mount of Olives. Here, Jesus spent a night in agonized prayer before being nailed to a cross. His mission was to drink the cup of suffering for you and for me. But what does this mean? Let’s examine the significance of the suffering of Christ.

Some Christians believe the walk of faith should bring them happiness and prosperity. But our Master’s real legacy includes suffering. To walk where Jesus walked means walking in Gethsemane. In that garden a decision was reached that made salvation possible.

Every day we hear a thousand voices call out, saying “listen to me.” But only one voice really matters. When Jesus was transfigured, God spoke from within a cloud, saying “This is my beloved Son... listen to Him.”

Atop a high mountain, a glorified Jesus appeared along with Moses and Elijah in the presence of Peter, James, and John. The Transfiguration was an amazing event. In today’s message we examine the significance of those who gathered on that momentous day.

On a high place, Jesus gave three disciples a blinding vision of the future. Moses and Elijah appeared with Him, symbolizing Jesus as fulfilling both the law and the prophets. The experience was so powerful that, years later, Peter wrote about being “on the Holy Mountain.”
