The Blinding Power of an Offense Part 1

February 4, 2013

It’s instinctive to recoil from pain, whether it’s physical or emotional. But some pain in life is inevitable. And when others cause our conflicts, it’s hard to escape that pain. Something inside each of us cries out for justice. Today, we’re beginning a series to help us deal with the wrongs that others inflict.

The Eclipse Of God
Just as the moon obscures the sun’s light during an eclipse, today’s radical secularism has obscured the light of God. But God’s light still shines—and He is calling us to shine His light in our growing darkness. Is God more tolerant than He used to be? Pastor Lutzer shows how God is both a God of wrath as well as grace; that He is both merciful and just, and both a redeemer and a judge. Deepen your love for our unchangeable God of the Bible and be empowered to proclaim the light of truth in a culture of darkness. To endure times of hardship, we need to have a support system in place. We need to be in the Word of God. We need to spend time in the presence of God. And we need to be in fellowship with the people of God. With these in place, God can revive our souls even in the middle of a dry and dusty land.

When times are good, it’s not hard to go it alone. But when calamity strikes, you need a support system around you. The prophet Jeremiah compares this to being like a tree next to a stream, drawing nourishment that can survive a drought. Believers facing a tough future need each other more than ever. This means connecting with fellow believers so that we all can bear fruit.

There comes a time in the decline of a nation when God will no longer delay judgment.  At that time, things get really bad. America may be at that point, and believers are caught up with everyone else when economic and social calamity strikes. How should believers act and live when the really hard times come? Today we will get some guidance from an Old Testament prophet who saw times like ours coming.

The Great Tribulation can be traced to the rage of Satan who wants one last chance to wreak havoc before facing doom—one last chance to shake his fist at God and the people of God; one last chance to get people to worship him instead of God; and one last chance to destroy the faith of those still alive who believe in Jesus. Today we will learn how to overcome our mortal enemy the devil.

In Revelation 13, the future Antichrist’s power is on display, and slaughtering Christians is what he’s doing. The Antichrist is known as the beast. He forces the whole world to worship him by using military and economic pressure. Without his mark, no one can buy or sell. Could any of us maintain our faith in Jesus during a time like this, when not worshiping the beast means death?

In the Bible, the end-game for planet Earth is not a “tiptoe through the tulips.” Rather, it’s unimaginable war: a future Antichrist will arise and deceive the world into worshipping him. Anyone living at this time will face almost certain death unless they comply. Even now, believers face execution in many parts of the world. Could your faith survive in the face of oppression like this?

According to an article in Newsweek magazine, Christians are being murdered for their faith from one end of the Muslim world to the other and yet the mainstream media remains quiet. Like it was in ancient Rome, there is a war on to destroy the faith of believers in Christ, and this war is coming to our own shores. We must ask ourselves what it would take for us to deny our faith.

It’s easy to get anxious about the declining state of culture, and the sense that economic collapse is around the corner. How should believers approach living in a world that is on the edge of calamity? James’ words two thousand years ago are as relevant now as they were then. The bottom line: “Be patient, for the Lord is coming.”

Many people stash away cash in case the day of calamity comes. But what if your money’s of no value on that day? To trust in riches is to trust in a vapor that passes away. James talks a great deal about economic justice for the poor, telling us that one day, our gold and silver will not buy anything. Today we’ll learn some stark lessons for a future that may be just around the corner.

Many people watch the stock market like a hawk. Some get nervous when the price of gold drops. Money is something we all need, but one day the money we crave will be no more. One day, all transient things that give us security will vanish, and that is the day of final judgment. Then, what we are on the inside will be all that matters.
