Judge Not, That You Be Not Judged, Part 3 of 3 (Who Are You To Judge)

August 18, 2021

The race of life is hard enough without being chastised by another Christian for something that is a matter of wisdom and conscience. In this message we learn to discern the difference between core biblical principles and personal preferences to avoid judging others needlessly.

When You’ve Been Wronged
Conflict in relationships is inevitable, but healing and reconciliation often is not. Time and again we've tried every option and failed, and all we are left with is a load of guilt and pain. Pastor Erwin Lutzer shows how the blessing the Lord gives to those who suffer unjustly is worth the pain involved. He also illustrates the need to leave our broken relationships in the hands of God and move forward in our lives toward freedom. Jesus taught us to not judge a small splinter in someone else’s eye without first removing the large wood beam from our own eye. That principle from Matthew 7 is our focus in this message. Have you checked your own eye lately?

In our day, there is much error mixed with truth. Wise believers evaluate what they see around them with a filter of discernment. In this message we open Matthew chapter 7 to discover when, and how, to judge what we see.

Many evangelical churches now feel that fitting in with the world is the best way to reach people. But for what purpose? Christ calls people to repent and believe. People need to make an about-face, not join a social club. In this message we learn why the church must be distinct from the culture to have any impact on the culture at all.

It’s easy to fit in and follow the crowd. It takes no effort to blend in and accept whatever we encounter without question. But we’re called to run life’s race, not in the well-worn ruts, but on the high ground of God’s Word. In this message we learn why we must discern right from wrong, and truth from error.

The world is happy to accommodate various viewpoints, as long as none claim to be the absolute truth. But if we adopt that tolerance, we’re not able to distinguish between truth, half-truth, and error. But as Christians, the truth cuts through the confusion and sets us apart.

Years ago, people could see a big difference between the world and the church. In our day, we’re in the fast lane with everybody else, racing to acquire more goods for our short-term benefit. We need clear teaching from Jesus about resetting our priorities.

We invest heavily in the few years we have on earth. But most of us invest very little in the life that follows after we die. In a parable, Jesus makes it clear that we need to reset our priorities and live today in view of the real life yet to come.

The parables of Jesus cut to the deepest level of human motivation. In the story of the rich fool, greed was one issue—but covetousness was another. None of us is free from the grip of wanting more. This sin can block our view of what’s really important: where we spend eternity.

In a parable, Jesus told of a man who had too much stuff and needed bigger barns to hold it all. But he was mistaken to assume his stuff was all he needed. The man didn’t realize that what he really needed was something his barns could never hold.

Jesus told a story about a man who had a lot—but wanted a lot more. It was this man who said, “Eat, drink and be merry.” This parable of Jesus is chilling: that very night the man’s life was demanded of him. If there’s one thing you want to get right, it’s where you will spend eternity.
