Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. Many people have dogs who won’t do what they’re told. Only when put on a leash will they go where they are supposed to go. But sometimes we are equally stubborn. Jonah finally preached to the Ninevites, but only through clenched teeth. Do we ever fight God this way?

God wants His servants focused on God’s agenda, not their own. It took extraordinary measures to get Jonah back on the road to Nineveh, but he finally went, in body if not in heart. In this message we learn how Jonah’s lessons continued, and the importance for us today.

Sometimes, circumstances overwhelm us, forcing us to turn to God for a way out. Jonah was certainly overwhelmed in the belly of a great fish. For Jonah, that experience truly marked his death to self-reliance. He realized that salvation is from the Lord.

God has amazing ways of getting us to say yes. He does not make us puppets; rather, He arranges conditions so that we will choose to do His will. Sometimes those conditions can be tough, and they stay that way until we submit to God’s authority.

It’s common to hear people explain the Gospel as if being saved is a decision a sinner can make whenever they choose. But the story of Jonah provides clear evidence that God is the one who oversees our choices. In this message, we find out who is really in charge, and how His purposes cannot be thwarted.

When God wants to get the attention of one of His servants, He has many creative options. In the case of Jonah, God took extreme measures. The belly of a great fish is hardly a vacation, and Jonah got the message.

For some, finding God’s will is hard. On the other hand, Jonah knew with precision what God’s will was. And yet he still did his own thing. In this message, we turn again to Jonah chapter one for more details on the life of a disobedient prophet, a man determined to avoid doing God’s will.

Jonah was determined to avoid doing a distasteful job. He resisted preaching to a pagan city so that they might repent. Jonah would rather run from God than tell the Ninevites that judgment could be averted. But in this message we learn how God blocked Jonah’s escape route.
