Conflict With A Giant Part 3

August 30, 2022

The giants we face—a layoff, a heartache, or even our sin—can seem bigger than us. David’s example in defeating Goliath led to Israel’s victory as courage bred more courage. In this message, we find three lessons to help us face our giants. Whether ours is a decisive victory or a drawn-out battle, no giant is bigger than God.

When You’ve Been Wronged
Conflict in relationships is inevitable, but healing and reconciliation often is not. Time and again we've tried every option and failed, and all we are left with is a load of guilt and pain. Pastor Erwin Lutzer shows how the blessing the Lord gives to those who suffer unjustly is worth the pain involved. He also illustrates the need to leave our broken relationships in the hands of God and move forward in our lives toward freedom. Courage takes years to develop, but only a moment to demonstrate. David’s courage before Goliath started in a pasture while tending sheep. In this message, we consider what a God-sized imagination like David’s can do in the face of a towering obstacle. God prepared a young man for a decisive battle.

When we face insurmountable obstacles, we often ask, “Where is God?” David faced a literal giant named Goliath. In this message from 1 Samuel 17, we paint the picture of the pagan giant and the paralyzed army. Our seemingly giant-sized problems are dwarfed by the size of our God.

God chose David unexpectedly because of the integrity of his heart—not his outward appearance. If we were choosing a king, we would naturally choose a warrior not a teenage boy who tends sheep. In this message, we ponder the characteristics of the heart that God saw in David. What is the state of our hearts?

When no one thinks we amount to anything, we are often ignored. Young David had lots of older brothers who overshadowed him as he tended sheep. In this message, we meet his brothers according to their birth order. God used the conflicts of David’s early family life to prepare him to become king.

We typically evaluate people by their appearance, personality, or intelligence. But in 1 Samuel 16, we discover that God evaluated the shepherd boy David differently than his brothers. In this message, we follow David’s family tension through God’s selection of a new king. Our God still does great things with those the world sees as insignificant.

When we give to our church, what kind of outcome do we anticipate? Since God’s grace to us abounds, we can practice generosity. In this message, we recognize how giving creates a strong root from which much fruit can grow—fruit that multiplies in the lives of others. Cheerful giving truly brings about a blessed life.

Is there a correspondence between what we give financially and what God is going to give back to us? Scripture reveals God’s heart towards givers. In this message from 2 Corinthians 9, we examine our hearts to find our true motivations for contributing. Imagine the kind of harvest that radical generosity will bring for God’s glory.

How much should we give to God’s work? We reap what we sow. The law of sowing and reaping applies in giving. In this message, we explore the context of Paul’s revolutionary understanding of finances for the church in Corinth. Let’s identify what might hinder us from being cheerful givers.

Money is powerfully deceptive. In Jesus’ parable of the rich man and Lazarus, He reveals how money can blind us to what’s on the other side of eternity. In this message, we learn the most vital lesson about wise money management. If we are seduced by the love of money, our eternal destiny and our reward hangs in the balance.

Pastor Erwin Lutzer says, “If money becomes our God, it will eventually become our devil.” In Luke 16, Jesus gave us a parable about shrewdly managing money. In this message, we reflect on how to turn worldly wealth into eternal dividends. Where we invest our money reveals our ultimate loyalties.
