Breaking Down The Cycle Part 3

July 1, 2022

Addictions to pornography and illicit sex run deep, but the cure runs deeper still. That cure requires something to believe, something to do, and something to share. In this message from Matthew 5, we focus on what we must do to be set free. God can change us at the heart level—and He delights to do it.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. Addictions are widespread in our culture—even our churches. We all have the potential for failure. Of course, we want change to happen like the flip of a switch. But it takes effort and time. In this message from Matthew 5, we begin three steps to break the cycle of addiction and sin. Though it is a process, not an event, we can find freedom.

A pattern of unforgiveness can suck all the joy from our life. But because forgiveness seems unfair, we try to look for any alternative to avoid paying the cost. In this message, we find the way out of bitterness and the process back to joy. Because Christ paid the debt we could not pay, there is hope for our future.

How can we forgive someone of grievous wrong when reconciliation seems impossible? The bitterness of unforgiveness often turns into depression and anger, sometimes toward God. In this message, we distinguish forgiveness from reconciliation. It takes one to forgive, but two to reconcile. Let’s find the way forward.

Any kind of relational and sexual abuse leaves scars. Many vividly remember the abuse they have suffered. Some are troubled by the memories of those they have abused. Forgiveness is not easy. In this message, Pastor Lutzer begins to list six misconceptions about forgiveness which are biblically incorrect. But healing is possible through God’s forgiveness.

Does restoration with God seem out of reach? A prostitute in Jesus’ day knew she had offended God. Her tearful desire for healing led to Christ extending these words, “Your sins are forgiven.” In this message, we discover what is greater than the sin in our past. In the presence of Jesus, we can be declared clean.

After living in sin, is it possible for God’s peace to heal our hearts? The woman who wiped Jesus’ feet with her hair knew this man could restore her dignity as well as forgive her sins and immorality. In this message, we begin to explore five steps on the way to wholeness. Now is the time to fall before the Savior and find peace.

Can we sin too much to be forgiven? Many assume God will not forgive sexual sins, so they sin even more, not knowing the mercy of Jesus. In this message from Luke 7, we listen to a real-life story of how Jesus restored someone’s dignity despite a lifetime of sexual sin. Are we determined to meet Jesus at any cost?

Many find it difficult to commit to marriage, so they live for the pleasures of the moment. Only later do they see the damage to their soul from the bonds of false intimacy. In this message, we step into freedom with Christ through honest confession and wholesome relationships. No matter how strong those bonds are or how far we’ve fallen, God is the God of new beginnings.

Immoral relationships create very deep bonds, even between people having “casual” sex. The more bonds we make, the tougher they are to break. In this message from I Corinthians 6, we identify the consequences of defiling bonds from the Bible’s most important teaching on sexuality. It’s time we go back to the Designer’s handbook.
