A Bad Man Made Good Part 4

July 15, 2013

Some philosophers see both good and evil in human nature. For them, the side that wins is determined by our environment. As much as we’d like to take credit for being basically nice people, only the new life implanted by God in the new birth can take a bad man and make him good.

One Minute After You Die
Many people spend more time planning for a vacation than preparing for eternity. Perhaps it doesn't seem real that we will still exist—fully conscious and alive—beyond the grave. But it's true, and it calls for careful consideration. In this updated edition of One Minute After You Die, bestselling author Erwin Lutzer urges readers to study what the Bible says. Can near-death experiences teach us anything about life after death? How can we prepare for our own final moment? With 700,000 copies in print, this bestselling work makes an encouraging gift for believers and a tasteful word of caution for the undecided. If you think your sins are too big or too many, think about the Apostle Paul. He persecuted Christians—even to their deaths. But God changed his heart and his desires, and he became the author of a good chunk of the New Testament. His love for God, for Christ, and for God’s Word is on every page he wrote.

We are all sinners, yet we can be made good. Our desires can change, but they can only be changed by God. You need a love for Him, His word, and a love for others. You need a sense of brokenness and humility. These can only be implanted into your heart by God.

Can a bad man be made good? First, we need to define who is “bad.” According to the Bible, we are all bad. When it comes to sin, we all have a pre-existing condition. We’re all desire driven and accustomed to evil.

In order to come clean and walk in the true light, confession and restoration must be as wide as the offense—both with God and with others. Are you going to receive God’s full blessing or not?
July 9, 2013
If you want to walk in the true light, you have to agree with God on everything. You have to come clean not just with God, but with others as well.
July 8, 2013
We like to think of ourselves as basically good people who make mistakes, not as sinners desperately needing the grace of God. But if you don’t see yourself as a sinner, you don’t see a need for redemption.

Throughout the Bible we see the contrast of darkness and light—darkness is sin, and light is God. Those who walk in darkness rationalize their sin, learn to manage their guilt, and even believe that they’re walking in the light. They not only lie to others, they are deceiving themselves and even lying to God.

Pastor Lutzer shows us that we have our own kingdoms—career, money, even our giftedness —and how we can easily fall into the same snare as Saul did. By comparing David’s reaction to Saul’s attacks, we also learn what we can do to keep from sinning.
July 3, 2013
Trying to hold on to his kingdom by destroying those around him, King Saul gives us a good example of how an obsession with control can become evil.
July 2, 2013
Control lies at the heart of sin. We’re all born controllers. But when does wanting to control something become, not just a sin, but evil?
