Trying His Patience

November 19, 2014
God allows different trials and suffering in our lives so that He can work on our character, build our hope in Him, and exercise our endurance. Waiting on God involves keeping our faith in Him, even when we don’t feel like it, and it helps us avoid the consequences of when we try things our own way.

There are times when we do not want Jesus to come in and work on certain parts of us, but what we need to realize is that Jesus has purpose in His work in our lives, even in discipline. Rather than continuing in out own ways, which are not working for us, we need to let Him into our hearts so that He can work on us and show us His way for our lives.

When we become Christians, Jesus lives inside of us and all of His power is, therefore, in us. God may call us out to do simple acts of obedience, but when we live in disobedience we are not only effecting ourselves but others around us as well. We need to live in obedience to God so that He can use us as a lifeboat for others.

We all face the same consequence of death because of our sin, but because of Jesus’ death and resurrection we can receive His forgiveness and live forever with Him in Heaven. Instead of hiding our sin from God who sees it anyway, we need to step into His light and allow Him to work in us and through us.

God can use anyone and everyone, no matter how intelligent or ignorant we are and no matter what sins lie in the past. When we feel Him calling us to Himself, we need to let go of our own insecurities or pride and accept His unconditional grace, love and forgiveness. When we live in obedience to Him, it’s amazing what He can do in and through us.

There may be times when God tells us to do something, but He may also tell us that we need to wait on Him to do it. When God’s power is present in our lives because we are waiting on Him, it is evident to everyone around us. When we try to do something in our own power we will always fail, so it is better to wait on God for His leadership, guidance and power.

Every one of us has a deadline on our lives, but we do not get to know when that is. Rather than wasting our lives with meaningless things, we need to approach every circumstance and relationship as if it’s our last day on earth. We must not wait to give our lives to Christ because it could be too late in the end.

Sometimes it’s the most religious people who question the truth, rather than the unreligious atheists, because they are too caught up in their traditions that they fail to see the light. We need to evaluate ourselves and make sure that we are not too caught up in our own ways and playing the devil’s advocate to what God may be trying to show us.

It is easy to slip into believing what the world tells us about our sin, that it’s not bad and it doesn’t hurt us. The Scripture gives us God’s standard that does not change and tells us that sin is sin, and the more we sin the more He will discipline us because He loves us. We need to see our sin how He sees it, turn from it and obey Him.

The Bible teaches us the importance of fasting and praying and the difference that can make in our lives. When we are faced with a situation, whether it be a sin struggle in our own lives or in another person’s life, we need to be willing to give up something our bodies need so as to pray more fervently.

Some things God asks us to do may seem very silly, but we need to trust that God has a greater plan in mind and when we obey Him we are taking part in His plan. The story of Rahab is a great example of a woman who left the sin in her life behind her, obeyed God and became part of the genealogy of Jesus.

About Richard Ellis

Authentic... Genuine... Sincere... This guy is the real deal. He loves God. He loves his wife Rebecca and his 3 daughters. He loves people. He loves his job. He loves Texas BBQ. He loves an occasional round of golf. And he loves the Dallas Cowboys (but don’t hold that against him!).

Richard grew up as a missionary kid in Brazil, coming back to the states to finish his education. He graduated from Baylor University in 1982 with a BA in Oral Communications, and earned his MDIV in 1985 from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, making him the sixth generation of pastors in his family. His early days of ministry included serving for three years as the Single Adults Pastor at the First Baptist Church of Dallas.

Then in 1997, Richard Ellis founded Reunion Church, a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, non-denominational church in the heart of Dallas,Texas. Dallas needed a church like it. And it would need a pastor like Richard. So Reunion Church was born. And now the radio show and the website (www.RichardEllisTalks.com) join the Reunion Church community under the leadership of this guy. And we’re all the better for it!
