We all tend to gravitate to people who are like us.  When it comes to the family of God, the Church, this can be detrimental.  Jesus taught that we should focus on inviting people to our parties who cannot return the favor; in other words, do something for someone who does not have the ability to pay us back so that our intentions are not for our own selfish gain but rather to give to those considered less than ourselves.  Riff raff is another term for garbage, and many who are low in society are thrown off as such.  Just as Jesus came to the earth as riff raff, born in a barn, and he focused a great majority of His ministry on people of the lowest standing in society, we are to also reach out to the riff raff in our world because when it comes to eternity in Heaven, we are all equal.

Everyone struggles with something in their lives that always causes them to lose the battle.  The more they lose, the more they feel that there is no point in even trying to win.  As Christians, our lives are described as running a race, however that race has many obstacles.  Rather than allowing the large obstacles that always trip us determine our having a losing attitude towards smaller obstacles as well, we must keep our eyes on Jesus, find grace in Him, and strive to win.  The more we win at the smaller things, the more we will be confident in our ability, with Christ, to win at the big things.  We must first make the choice of what we want to win at before we can start winning.

In the Christian culture it is far too easy to become calloused and hard to the Biblical truths that are drilled into us from childhood.  When we feel like we already have things figured out, we become subconsciously closed off to what God may be trying to tell us.  Instead of reading our Bibles merely to mark it off the daily checklist, we should always read it for the purpose of hearing what God wants to tell us through each passage and to then respond by doing what He tells us to do.  By approaching the necessary reading of Scripture in this way, we maintain a soft heart and open ears to be able to hear God when He speaks to us.

About Richard Ellis

Authentic... Genuine... Sincere... This guy is the real deal. He loves God. He loves his wife Rebecca and his 3 daughters. He loves people. He loves his job. He loves Texas BBQ. He loves an occasional round of golf. And he loves the Dallas Cowboys (but don’t hold that against him!).

Richard grew up as a missionary kid in Brazil, coming back to the states to finish his education. He graduated from Baylor University in 1982 with a BA in Oral Communications, and earned his MDIV in 1985 from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, making him the sixth generation of pastors in his family. His early days of ministry included serving for three years as the Single Adults Pastor at the First Baptist Church of Dallas.

Then in 1997, Richard Ellis founded Reunion Church, a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, non-denominational church in the heart of Dallas,Texas. Dallas needed a church like it. And it would need a pastor like Richard. So Reunion Church was born. And now the radio show and the website (www.RichardEllisTalks.com) join the Reunion Church community under the leadership of this guy. And we’re all the better for it!
