Sudden Death

May 15, 2014
Death can happen suddenly and we need to be prepared for it, first by choosing to accept God's gift of salvation, and second by forgiving others and living according to God's will. We may not know exactly when we will die but we can be ready.

The story of Samson is a great example of someone who screwed their life up and yet God still used them anyway. We are all cracked from things in our past, but God can pick us up and use us to hit a homerun.

If we want to know what God's will for our lives is we need to read His Word. He has given us directions on how to live and it is better that we know it than to live ignorantly and face consequences. We may still make mistakes, but we always know the directions to come back to.

God has called us all to live a life of holiness, and one way to do that is to ask Him to sweep our lives and reveal to us the sin that needs to be gone. When we get rid of sin in our lives through repentance, we can then go to Him and ask for what it is that we need.

Just like homing pigeons have some way of always returning home, we as Christians have the Spirit that draws us back to God no matter how far away we may drift. Repentance is not only for the unbeliever, but also for us as believers, and we need to stop wherever we are and return to God.

We all make mistakes in our lives and we all need to turn to God and repent. True repentance starts with confession and continues with a changed mind and behavior.

It is important that we all, as leaders, listen to wisdom from others above us so that we can lead those who are following well. When we mess up, it is important to repent of our mistakes and apologize to the person or people that it has effected, especially God.

Jesus was the perfect sacrifice who silently took the punishment for our sins so that we can have a relationship with God. He gives us a perfect example of being silent when suffering comes because either God is sheering us from the fluff of our lives for His sake or He will defend us from what comes against us.

Rather than focusing on the difficulties we face when we stand up for Christ, we need to look back at the early Christians as examples and realize that we can take whatever is being dished out with God's help. He has called us to spread the Gospel to all the world, so in order to do and be what He has called us to we must let go of distractions and press on.

In Biblical times when a slave finished paying off their debt and were set free, they could choose to remain with their master, having an awl placed through their ear as a sign. Though trials and struggles will come, God has purpose in everything to make us holy and no one will take better care of us than Him. Christ's death paid our debt and we are made free, but God desires for us to choose to stay with Him as His slave because He takes such great care of us.

Our sin nature that we're born into puts our lives in a nosedive. We have the choice to continue that way, sinning all the more because we're going down anyway or lying to ourselves thinking that we can fix it on our own. The truth is that only Jesus can give us the power to fly, so we must turn nose up and allow Him to work in us and through us to live the life God intended for us to live.

About Richard Ellis

Authentic... Genuine... Sincere... This guy is the real deal. He loves God. He loves his wife Rebecca and his 3 daughters. He loves people. He loves his job. He loves Texas BBQ. He loves an occasional round of golf. And he loves the Dallas Cowboys (but don’t hold that against him!).

Richard grew up as a missionary kid in Brazil, coming back to the states to finish his education. He graduated from Baylor University in 1982 with a BA in Oral Communications, and earned his MDIV in 1985 from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, making him the sixth generation of pastors in his family. His early days of ministry included serving for three years as the Single Adults Pastor at the First Baptist Church of Dallas.

Then in 1997, Richard Ellis founded Reunion Church, a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, non-denominational church in the heart of Dallas,Texas. Dallas needed a church like it. And it would need a pastor like Richard. So Reunion Church was born. And now the radio show and the website (www.RichardEllisTalks.com) join the Reunion Church community under the leadership of this guy. And we’re all the better for it!
