God never intended for us to think to little or too much of ourselves. When we accept His love for us then we can see ourselves in a correct perspective as valuable to Him and for Him. We can then love ourselves and love others around us as we see them in the same light.

The story of Daniel in the lion’s den is just one example of a man’s obedience to God even when it potentially cost him his life. God may not always rescue you like He did Daniel, but your obedience to Him will be rewarded in eternity.

When we give our lives to God, He tells us in Scripture that He makes us a new creation. He doesn’t just refurbish what’s here but rather makes us completely new. However, we must continually war with the old man who’s used to running things and isn’t going to give up without a fight until we are in Heaven with God for eternity.

We all tend to gravitate to people who are like us. Riff raff is another term for garbage, and many who are low in society are thrown off as such. Just as Jesus focused a great majority of His ministry on people thought as lower in society, we are to also reach out to the riff raff in our world because when it comes to eternity in Heaven we are all equal.

It is easy to compare ourselves to other people based on what’s on the outside, but God is more focused on working with us on the inside. If we are waiting for God to bring a significant other into our life, we must not compromise our standards but rather let Him work on us while we wait.

The Old Testament gives us a picture of the detailed Tabernacle that God had His people build to worship Him. While it was beautiful and important, the purpose of all of it was to slaughter an animal and spill its blood to cover the sins of the people. Since Christ was the final sacrifice whose blood can cover all of our sins, we can go to Him to be clean from our past, present and future.

We are not promised an exemption from the pains and suffering of this world, but we are promised hope within which we can grieve during those times. The hope comes only from Christ who redeems all things.

The kind of love the Bible teaches us is a kind that only Jesus can exemplify through us because we will never be able to match the unconditional, kind and long-suffering standard on our own. We must allow Jesus to be in every aspect of our lives so that He can live this out through us in every area and to every person.

Jesus says that even if we look at a person with lust it is as if we have already committed adultery in our hearts with them. We all know the right thing to do, but we all mess up. God freely offers grace and mercy when we fail, but He continues to call us to a higher standard of true love.

It is easy to cast others off that we do not like, get along with, or may even be repulsed by. However, Jesus commanded that we love one another without excuses. When we love others we show the world the love that God has for them and we can love them because He loves us.

You cannot manufacture the presence of God. His Spirit fills His people and that is what attracts people to church, not the beauty of the building. May His Spirit be so evident in us so that when we are together people will say, “God is in that house.”

About Richard Ellis

Authentic... Genuine... Sincere... This guy is the real deal. He loves God. He loves his wife Rebecca and his 3 daughters. He loves people. He loves his job. He loves Texas BBQ. He loves an occasional round of golf. And he loves the Dallas Cowboys (but don’t hold that against him!).

Richard grew up as a missionary kid in Brazil, coming back to the states to finish his education. He graduated from Baylor University in 1982 with a BA in Oral Communications, and earned his MDIV in 1985 from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, making him the sixth generation of pastors in his family. His early days of ministry included serving for three years as the Single Adults Pastor at the First Baptist Church of Dallas.

Then in 1997, Richard Ellis founded Reunion Church, a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, non-denominational church in the heart of Dallas,Texas. Dallas needed a church like it. And it would need a pastor like Richard. So Reunion Church was born. And now the radio show and the website (www.RichardEllisTalks.com) join the Reunion Church community under the leadership of this guy. And we’re all the better for it!
