I Said I Do But Now I Don’t

November 11, 2016

If our relationship with God is not working out then any other relationship we have, our marriage relationship specifically, will not work out for long. No matter what difficulty we face, if we turn to God and let Him work in our situation, nothing is impossible for Him to redeem and cover in grace and love.

Every marriage has moments of struggle, but God can take a relationship that seems impossible and turn it around to be filled with love and joy. The commitment in marriage is until death and God will give us the strength we need to make it through the difficult times if we ask Him.

Marriage is not a commitment to be taken lightly but rather a choice to stick with one person for the rest of our lives. This means that we give up looking around or comparing other people and we focus on what God has given us and take all joy and satisfaction in it.

It is important that we discuss the possibilities around facing health complications and making the commitment to stick with one another in a marriage relationship. If the time comes that we are caring for the other, we must take the time to reassure them that we love them and we’re not going anywhere.

While hardships can be used as a time to strengthen a marriage relationship, sometimes we have the option of avoiding financial difficulty if we would just make wise decisions. When we trust God for His provision and be good stewards of what He gives us, we can live in peace and contentment.

The devil and his demons are consistently working to destroy us. The only way that we can stand firm against the devil is to pray like Hell for ourselves and for others. We must always remember that God empowers us to fight in this spiritual battle when we pray fervently because sometimes it’s prayer that can make all the difference.

A reality of life is that tragic things can happen, and marriages can take a hit when trials come. In those times, we must make a decision on whether or not we will cling to God and to each other or if we will let it all go.

God designed sex to be enjoyed in a marriage relationship, but it is most enjoyed with both partners experience intimacy that goes beyond the physical pleasure. When we pursue a relationship with God and keep Him as our focus, He can help us stay committed to our choice to love one another even when it gets hard.

Too quickly couples rush to get married without waiting on God’s timing and blessing, and it can cause a lot of complications. We must be willing to give up our wants and desires, laying them on the alter, and trust that if it is for our best then He will give it back in His time.

It’s easy to compromise our standards in finding a mate when we get tired of waiting on God to bring the right kind of person. Rather than focusing on who He’ll bring and when He’ll bring them, we need to focus more on falling more in love with Jesus and trust Him and His timing.

The Bible clearly states that we are slaves, but the master is up to us. We can choose to be slaves to sin, allowing the devil to run our lives, or we can be slaves to God and live in obedience. Even when we disobey God, His grace is still extended to us and sometimes that comes through consequence.

About Richard Ellis

Authentic... Genuine... Sincere... This guy is the real deal. He loves God. He loves his wife Rebecca and his 3 daughters. He loves people. He loves his job. He loves Texas BBQ. He loves an occasional round of golf. And he loves the Dallas Cowboys (but don’t hold that against him!).

Richard grew up as a missionary kid in Brazil, coming back to the states to finish his education. He graduated from Baylor University in 1982 with a BA in Oral Communications, and earned his MDIV in 1985 from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, making him the sixth generation of pastors in his family. His early days of ministry included serving for three years as the Single Adults Pastor at the First Baptist Church of Dallas.

Then in 1997, Richard Ellis founded Reunion Church, a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, non-denominational church in the heart of Dallas,Texas. Dallas needed a church like it. And it would need a pastor like Richard. So Reunion Church was born. And now the radio show and the website ( join the Reunion Church community under the leadership of this guy. And we’re all the better for it!
