Forgiveness – Dealing With the Past

November 27, 2018

We can come up with all the reasons to not forgive someone who has hurt us, but God calls us to forgive them no matter what. Since we have been forgiven of all of our sins, we should release the hurt that someone has caused us and extend forgiveness to them.

The Bible is very specific about sins in our lives that we must be rid of when we choose to have Jesus be not only our Savior but also our Lord. When He’s the one running the show for how we live and the decisions we make, our lives represent Him more clearly and the benefits that come with living in the way He intended for us to live.

God’s grace and mercy through Christ covers all of our sins so that we no longer have to be ashamed but can rather stand in His presence. Instead of giving into the lies that the devil tells us about worldly things that can cover our shame, we need to rest in the covering of Christ, knowing that we are redeemed through Him.

When we view our money as God’s money, we go to Him and ask before we buy anything. God gives us wisdom for every purchase, and He promises to provide for all of our needs.

Everyone struggles with different sins, yet none of them are and worse than another one in God’s eyes. When He asks us to give up our sin and quit it, instead of easing off of it we need to let it go cold turkey.

When we thank God for things in our lives that are hard, we show that our trust is in Him to bring good out of our difficulties. It is not easy to give a sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, but in doing so we focus our hearts on God and His plans that we can’t see instead of on what trial we are walking through in the moment.

The story of Jesus healing ten lepers and only having one of them come back to thank Him is a lot more common of a story than it should be. Most of us ask God for stuff but never go back to thank Him for anything. The Bible says that no matter what our circumstances, even in difficult times, we should always be thanking God in all things.

God is sovereign and in control of all things, allowing circumstances to come our way that may challenge us. When we find ourselves in difficult situations, we must respond by trusting that God is still in control and His plans are best.

Jesus said that wide is the road that leads to destruction and many follow it, but few find the straight and narrow path that leads to eternal life. The only way we will find that path is by following God’s direction in our lives, and the first place to find direction is from the Bible.

God has a perfect plan for our lives and the lives of each child to be born. Instead of being so focused on making our will happen, we need to slow down and trust that God knows what He’s doing and can intervene in any situation.

It is common for especially men to go through a midlife crisis where they get bored with what they have in their lives and seek after more pleasurable things. God wants us to stay focused on Him and not be distracted by the things of the world because He is the only one who can provide true pleasure and satisfaction.

About Richard Ellis

Authentic... Genuine... Sincere... This guy is the real deal. He loves God. He loves his wife Rebecca and his 3 daughters. He loves people. He loves his job. He loves Texas BBQ. He loves an occasional round of golf. And he loves the Dallas Cowboys (but don’t hold that against him!).

Richard grew up as a missionary kid in Brazil, coming back to the states to finish his education. He graduated from Baylor University in 1982 with a BA in Oral Communications, and earned his MDIV in 1985 from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, making him the sixth generation of pastors in his family. His early days of ministry included serving for three years as the Single Adults Pastor at the First Baptist Church of Dallas.

Then in 1997, Richard Ellis founded Reunion Church, a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, non-denominational church in the heart of Dallas,Texas. Dallas needed a church like it. And it would need a pastor like Richard. So Reunion Church was born. And now the radio show and the website (www.RichardEllisTalks.com) join the Reunion Church community under the leadership of this guy. And we’re all the better for it!
