Cutting Corners

In the Old Testament Law, God said that when harvesting a field, anything left over after the harvesting should be left in the field for the poor, widows and orphans. God has blessed us with so much, but we tend to hold onto everything we have so tightly. Rather than being selfish with what we have, we should share it and bless someone else.

It is easy to be selfish with our money, but we must realize that it’s not even ours to begin with. When we live as though all of our money is God’s we will spend it differently and for the purpose of blessing others and glorifying Him.

God wants to use us for His great work, but He uses trials to prepare us for those works. If we spend our lives running from trials, we will never be strengthened and refined to be used by God for great things. If we prepare ourselves by studying Scripture, then face the trials head on when they come, we show ourselves to be His good and faithful servants, willing and able to be used by Him however He pleases.

In order for God to use us to bless others we need to go to Him for wisdom in using all the things He’s given us. When we seek His wisdom in our finances, we will bless us and bless others through us.

We all have things in our lives that annoy us like a constant drip of water or yapping Chihuahua. Rather than letting these things get the best of us, we should follow Christ’s example and keep our eyes on the Lord, learning from these things whatever it is He wants to teach us.

Even Christians can live in the dark, hiding their sin and being prisoners of war. However, God calls us to expose our sin, live in the light and walk in truth, embracing the abundant life He offers to us.

The story of Samson is a great example of someone who screwed their life up and yet God still used them anyway. We are all cracked from things in our past, but God can pick us up and use us to hit a homerun.

If we want to know what God’s will for our lives is we need to read His Word. He has given us directions on how to live and it is better that we know it than to live ignorantly and face consequences. We may still make mistakes, but we always know the directions to come back to.

It’s easy to complain when we’re not getting what we want, but the Bible tells us to have faith in God without complaining. We can learn from the Israelites who didn’t get to see the promised land because they chose to complain instead of believe, and we can put our trust in God who has never let us down in the past.

Just like homing pigeons have some way of always returning home, we as Christians have the Spirit that draws us back to God no matter how far away we may drift. Repentance is not only for the unbeliever, but also for us as believers, and we need to stop wherever we are and return to God.

We all make mistakes in our lives and we all need to turn to God and repent. True repentance starts with confession and continues with a changed mind and behavior.

About Richard Ellis

Authentic... Genuine... Sincere... This guy is the real deal. He loves God. He loves his wife Rebecca and his 3 daughters. He loves people. He loves his job. He loves Texas BBQ. He loves an occasional round of golf. And he loves the Dallas Cowboys (but don’t hold that against him!).

Richard grew up as a missionary kid in Brazil, coming back to the states to finish his education. He graduated from Baylor University in 1982 with a BA in Oral Communications, and earned his MDIV in 1985 from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, making him the sixth generation of pastors in his family. His early days of ministry included serving for three years as the Single Adults Pastor at the First Baptist Church of Dallas.

Then in 1997, Richard Ellis founded Reunion Church, a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, non-denominational church in the heart of Dallas,Texas. Dallas needed a church like it. And it would need a pastor like Richard. So Reunion Church was born. And now the radio show and the website (www.RichardEllisTalks.com) join the Reunion Church community under the leadership of this guy. And we’re all the better for it!
