Bittersweet

May 22, 2019

We have done nothing to deserve the love that God has chosen to give us that brought Him to sacrifice all that was needed to adopt us into His family. The sacrifice that Jesus made by dying on the cross was a bittersweet moment because all the pain He endured was worth it to Him to have us as family.

Too often we find ourselves holding onto what we have rather than letting it go so that God can fill us with so much more. God does not just love us but He likes us, too, and we must have faith in His amazing provision. God’s greatest blessings that He has given us are grace and mercy made evident in Christ.

Our appreciation for God should grow the more we learn about His love and sacrifice for us, not because we did anything to earn it but because He freely gave it. God values us more than we could ever fathom, and He has promised an inheritance for us in Heaven greater than we could ever imagine.

Creation reflects the grace and glory of God in that He did not create only what seems necessary but He made things beautiful and exceeded simple necessity. This is also shown in how He takes care of us in that He does not only give us things to meet our immediate needs but he graciously blesses us on top of that, like putting a cherry on top of a Sunday.

Even if everyone in our lives has left us, if we have God in us then we will never be alone because He has promised to never leave us. Rather than looking for someone else to fix us, we need to work on our relationship with Jesus and other relationships will balance and work out, and even if they don’t we have a God with us who understands loneliness.

We often get so entrapped in sin from our past, whether done to us or done by us, that it keeps us from moving forward. God says in His Word that He can remove sin completely from us so when the memories come we can hold onto His truth, find hope and move forward.

Everyone looks to things in the world to satisfy them but the truth is they will always come up empty until they turn to Jesus Himself. Only He gives water to quench the thirst of your soul and breath to give you life forever.

Satan knows each individual’s greatest weaknesses, and he uses that knowledge to offer us a hell of a deal when he tempts us. The fact is that if we are children of God, we have Christ’s power in us and with that comes the strength to resist temptation, no matter what kind of deal we’re offered.

While the Bible tells us to go out and spread the Gospel, we are also told to be careful about who we share it with. Not everyone is hungry for the truth and their intention is to tear us apart. God will show us who we should talk to and with whom we need to be silent.

God is not as concerned about whether or not He offends people as much as He is concerned about us living a righteous life. Sometimes that takes discipline and pain to bring us back to right living, but when we follow Him the benefits far outweigh the difficulties.

Scripture warns men and women against common temptations that we all face when it comes to matters of chasing each other. Ultimately, we could all save ourselves a mess of consequences if we chased God first above all else and trusted Him to put relationships back together or into place.

About Richard Ellis

Authentic... Genuine... Sincere... This guy is the real deal. He loves God. He loves his wife Rebecca and his 3 daughters. He loves people. He loves his job. He loves Texas BBQ. He loves an occasional round of golf. And he loves the Dallas Cowboys (but don’t hold that against him!).

Richard grew up as a missionary kid in Brazil, coming back to the states to finish his education. He graduated from Baylor University in 1982 with a BA in Oral Communications, and earned his MDIV in 1985 from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, making him the sixth generation of pastors in his family. His early days of ministry included serving for three years as the Single Adults Pastor at the First Baptist Church of Dallas.

Then in 1997, Richard Ellis founded Reunion Church, a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, non-denominational church in the heart of Dallas,Texas. Dallas needed a church like it. And it would need a pastor like Richard. So Reunion Church was born. And now the radio show and the website (www.RichardEllisTalks.com) join the Reunion Church community under the leadership of this guy. And we’re all the better for it!
