Anyway

March 3, 2011

It is easy to fall into believing the lie that because of our past God cannot use us. However, there are several characters in the Bible that God chose to use despite their shortcomings. God specifically chose each one of us to be used for His work before there was even time. His grace given to us by the power of the cross is what enables us to do His work no matter how much we have messed up in the past. We may have some serious struggles, but God chooses to use us anyway.

God Helps Those Who Help Themselves

There was a tree that had grown to be very large and had a tire around the trunk of it. The only way that tire could have gotten there is for it to be set around the tree very early on. Parents are given the command to teach their children the ways of the Lord so that they may walk in those ways early on in their lives. We all come to a point where we tire from walking in a spiritual relationship with God, but when we come to those points we must go back to the reasons we first fell in love with God so that we can continue moving forward with Him.

There are plenty of people in the world who go to church as part of their weekly schedule because their religion is just something else that they do. However, Jesus never called anyone to heartless religious acts, rather He called us to relationship with Him. When we have a relationship with God, it goes with us in our daily lives and we are called to act on that relationship in ways that help others, such as widows and orphans. God doesn’t want our actions unless it comes out of a heart for Him. Any other religious act that someone does apart from Christ is a waste of time.

There should always be people in our lives that help to strengthen our character and our relationship with God. The Bible says in reference to relationships that iron sharpens iron, and so we need to make sure that we have people who will confront us when we need to be confronted in order so that we may be sharpened. The kind of real relationships with people who will sharpen us is hard to find and we cannot find those relationships until we have a relationships with God. In the same way, we will not be able to truly love others as we love ourselves until we’ve experienced the love that God has for us. We must be healthy horizontally before we can be healthy vertically.

Jesus told a parable about a man with a fig tree that was not growing any figs. Instead of rooting it up, he agreed to have dung put around the bottom of the tree to help it bear fruit. Sometimes our lives start to smell awful and a reason for that is we may not be bearing fruit. God has created us for a purpose – to spread the Gospel. In order to bear fruit it is essential to be passionate about Him, so much so that if someone were to hold a gun to your head you still could not deny Christ. Jesus was passionate about us, even to death, and therefore we must be passionate about Him and spreading His Word.

About Richard Ellis

Authentic... Genuine... Sincere... This guy is the real deal. He loves God. He loves his wife Rebecca and his 3 daughters. He loves people. He loves his job. He loves Texas BBQ. He loves an occasional round of golf. And he loves the Dallas Cowboys (but don’t hold that against him!).

Richard grew up as a missionary kid in Brazil, coming back to the states to finish his education. He graduated from Baylor University in 1982 with a BA in Oral Communications, and earned his MDIV in 1985 from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, making him the sixth generation of pastors in his family. His early days of ministry included serving for three years as the Single Adults Pastor at the First Baptist Church of Dallas.

Then in 1997, Richard Ellis founded Reunion Church, a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, non-denominational church in the heart of Dallas,Texas. Dallas needed a church like it. And it would need a pastor like Richard. So Reunion Church was born. And now the radio show and the website (www.RichardEllisTalks.com) join the Reunion Church community under the leadership of this guy. And we’re all the better for it!
