There's an old word used to describe commitment, like the commitment in a marriage, and it's this:  covenant.  A covenant is weightier than a simple agreement, and one characteristic of a covenant is that two previously separate people become a single team through their agreement. Covenants are sacred in the Bible, but not everyone who enters into an agreement makes a covenant.

Love isn't like your favorite chocolate cake that can only be divided into a finite number of pieces. For example, when you have a second child, you get to experience your love multiply instead of being divided. You don't love your first child any less, you simply have new love to give to your the second child.

Back in the days of the Roman empire, a condemned person was stripped of all rights and privileges. Their future was devoid of hope, as if they were the living dead. Paul, a follower of Jesus who wrote much of the New Testament, referenced that scenario when he explained that there is no condemnation for people who surrender their lives to Jesus Christ (Romans 8:1). When it comes to hopelessness and death, we are free! Our pasts fall away, and we are given a renewed future.

The Hawaiian Islands make up a tropical paradise that sits in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, 2,500 miles away from the nearest land.  The waters that surround the islands are various shades of blue and gentle trade winds blow across the isles.  For 400 years, determined Polynesians on far away islands tried to sail those winds, following the migration of the Golden Plover, to new islands they believed must be there.  Their canoes could never keep up with the birds and they had to turn back. They kept trying for 400 years before they finally made it to the Hawaiian archipelago!

The people God chooses and equips for leadership are often not the people a board of directors would choose as a company's Chief Executive Officer (CEO). God's qualification for leadership boils down to being a dedicated servant. No fancy education or extreme confidence needed; God's man or woman needs only a willingness to follow where God is leading them, and sometimes, to wait.

They've been called The Passion Generation.  They're young adults between the ages of 25 and 40, known as Millennials, and they have many traits their elders find baffling.  Admirably, however, millennial young adults want to change the world, to do good, not just gain wealth for themselves, but meaningfully contribute to something that matters.

The writer Mark Twain once quipped, "Some people are troubled by the things in the Bible they can't understand. The things that trouble me are the things I can understand."  Yes, many people have the idea that the message of the Bible is troubling, depressing, bad news.  They have a sense of not having lived entirely the way they should have, and simply hope that the good that they do will outweigh the bad.  They nervously plan on slipping into heaven on that basis.

This word appears more than 250 times in the Bible.  You might think it means the same thing as the word, "Christian."  But when you call yourself by this name, it means a lot more than simply saying you are from the Christian faith.  What are we talking about?
