Why We Drift—And How God Responds

We are prone to wander, but we are deeply loved—and rescued—by God’s grace.

Bonnie Sala: If you were blindfolded and told to walk in a straight line, think you could do it? I'm Bonnie Sala with Reset. Research scientists say you can't. Experiments conducted in the Sahara Desert show that there's a human tendency to walk not in a straight line, but in circles. We need something to focus on, something to fix our eyes on, or we'll veer from a straight path every time.

What a reflection of a spiritual reality. Despite our best intentions, we're naturally caught up in endless cycles of selfishness, pride, greed, and the list goes on. God can see that. Scripture records that the Lord observed the extent of human wickedness on the earth and He saw that everything they thought or imagined was consistently and totally evil. He was sorry He had ever made them and put them on the earth.

But thankfully, as one pastor points out, those verses describe our condition, not our value. The good news is that we're of immense value to God. The Bible says God is so rich in mercy and He loved us so much that even though we were dead because of our sins, He gave us life when He raised Christ from the dead. It is only by God's grace that you have been saved.

To avoid walking in deadly spiritual circles, the Bible teaches us to fix or keep our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Are you dizzy from walking in circles? Fix your eyes on Jesus and make Him the one you look to for direction. I'm Bonnie Sala, ready to grow your faith? Discover practical tools and more at guidelines.org.
