Why God Hasn’t Fixed It Yet: Faith, Suffering, and the Gift of Endurance

When suffering lasts longer than you expected, it’s easy to wonder if your faith has failed but God says something different is happening beneath the surface.

Bonnie Sala: When suffering lasts longer than you expected, what happens to your faith? I’m Bonnie Sala with Reset.

A woman started a small business to support her children. She worked hard, prayed over it, and trusted God. But months passed and customers were few, while bills piled up. She began to wonder quietly, "Did I do something wrong? Or is faith not what I thought it was?"

Many of us have been taught that faith leads to quick breakthrough, and that if we believe enough, pray enough, or give enough, our struggles will disappear. But Scripture doesn't say this. The Bible book of James was a letter written to believers who were isolated and suffering. It contains encouragement for when troubles come your way, not if. Trials are not evidence of failure. God says that they are the place where something deeper is formed within us. It’s called endurance.

Even Jesus, God’s own Son, suffered. Scripture says that Jesus learned obedience through suffering, not because he lacked anything, but because he willingly entered fully into our human experience. He experienced the same struggles that you do. And because of that, the Bible reminds you that you have a God who understands your weakness completely.

Real faith isn't proven by how quickly our problems end. Real faith is revealed in how we continue to believe what God promises when problems linger. Endurance forms when you return again and again to a God who is present with you in the pain, not just waiting on the other side of it.

If you're in a long, difficult season, your faith isn't failing. Keep returning to the God who is with you. You can trust him to grow endurance in your life. I'm Bonnie Sala. Ready to grow your faith? Discover practical tools and more at guidelines.org.
