What To Do When God Feels Silent

When life turns out nothing like you expected and God feels distant, find out what the Bible says to believers who are exhausted, confused, and tempted to give up.

Bonnie Sala: God's silence can be hardest when life turns out nothing like you expected. I'm Bonnie Sala with Reset.

Some people begin following God expecting clarity, protection, or answers that come quickly. Instead, they face loss, rejection, and even danger. Maybe you prayed for help, but the hardship stayed. You trusted God, but the outcome broke your heart, and in the quiet that followed, it seemed that God was silent.

This experience isn't new. The Bible book of Hebrews was written to followers of Jesus who expected victory and instead endured persecution, imprisonment, and public shame. They believed that life with Jesus would be better, that Jesus would soon make everything right. But time passed, and their suffering continued. Many felt confused; they were exhausted and tempted to give up.

The book of Hebrews doesn't criticize their weakness. It reminds them that faith isn't a sprint; it's more like a marathon. Anyone who has run one knows there are moments when the excitement fades, the hill ahead feels steeper than you imagined, and the finish line is farther away than you were told. In those moments, endurance might just mean refusing to step off the course.

That's the kind of endurance Hebrews speaks about: "Let us run with endurance the race God has set before us," surrounded by others who ran before us with imperfect understanding and unfinished stories. And it tells us how: we do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus. Not on outcomes, not on timing, on Jesus, who endured suffering, silence, and rejection and understands faith in the dark.

If God feels quiet today, endurance may look very small—a whispered prayer, a remembered song. Even here, especially here, God has not left you. I'm Bonnie Sala. Ready to grow your faith? Discover practical tools and more at guidelines.org.
