Trusting God When Doors Close
Job loss, sudden change, and closed doors can feel like failure—disruption may be part of God’s bigger story still unfolding.
Bonnie Sala: When doors keep closing, it’s easy to assume something’s gone wrong. But what if God’s actually at work? I’m Bonnie Sala with Reset. Ever had a time in your life when you felt like everything was falling apart? Evan knew that feeling. The apartment he recently rented was suddenly sold. Soon after, he lost his job. Friends moved away, and everywhere he looked, doors were closing.
But in the midst of chaos, Evan kept praying. He still sensed God’s peace, an illogical yet quiet assurance saying, “Just wait, you’ll see what I’m planning.” A month later, a job opened in another country. It was a dream opportunity that stretched him in ways he couldn’t have imagined. If it had come earlier, he might have turned it down, holding tightly to what felt familiar.
The Bible tells a similar story about a man named Jacob. When his father-in-law grew hostile, God told Jacob, “Return to your father.” The hardships Jacob faced under his father-in-law weren’t the end; they were preparation. God was orchestrating circumstances to move Jacob into the life He had planned for him.
Sometimes hardships are ground for growth. Other times, God allows upheaval to prepare us for change we wouldn’t choose otherwise. Like a mother bird nudging her young from the nest, God sometimes removes comfort to teach us to fly. So when life shifts, doors close, or plans change, don’t panic. Go to God in prayer. Ask, “What are you doing in my life right now?”
Perhaps these closed doors are God’s way of calling you to a new season of growth and blessing. The Bible’s Psalms remind us, “The Lord directs the steps of the godly; He delights in every detail of their lives.” Closed doors don’t mean God has stopped leading you. I’m Bonnie Sala.
