The Only Way To Get Along With Others In Tough Times

February 9, 2021

Have you noticed that during crises, relationships feel more tense or difficult? In difficult circumstances, it is imperative to focus on conflict resolution through grace. Ephesians 4:2 reminds us to "make allowance for each other's faults because of your love." Making allowance means to create space or plan ahead. In other words, expect conflict during crises and respond knowing that arguments are often situationally heightened rather than personal attacks.

The life of Jesus Christ was radical in His day and continues to be a radical example today. He was not pressured by the traditions and social customs of His own culture when they went against the Word of God.  He was willing to stand apart from the crowd, yet could say, "Can any of you prove me guilty of sin?" (John 8:46). His life displayed complete honesty and soul‑penetrating insight into the lives of His contemporaries, and He was not always loved for it. He often faced hostile criticism but withstood it through constant communion with His Father in heaven.

Your capacity to handle stress often depends on your resources. If you are secure before a crisis, you are more likely to be able to stabilize during and after the crisis. But, even at your best going into a crisis, experiencing stress with other people highlights the most irritating behaviors in one another. Dr. Bruce Perry explains that stress shifts our regulatory capacities. We are less able to regulate our feelings and be resilient in turmoil. "There is an escalation of dysregulated behaviors,"[1] he says.   [1] Hope for Mental Health Community with Dr. Bruce Perry. Hope for Mental Health Community with Dr. Bruce Perry, April 26, 2020. https://www.facebook.com/KayWarrensPage/videos/221359749316417/?v=221359749316417&external_log_id=dfa3a8adb311f83825eb054bc95cdd83.

We often recoil against the idea of being disciplined because we associate it with punishment. The Bible makes a clear distinction. The Greek word paideuo in the Bible means "to discipline" and is used in the context of a parent guiding, training, or correcting a child or the instruction of a student. Paio, also Greek, means "to strike or wound" as when Jesus was whipped by Roman soldiers.

Justice is important to God (Isaiah 61:8) and the Bible says that we are to seek justice but love mercy. Obtaining vengeance, He says, is His task, not ours (Romans 12:19). How can we balance seeking justice with loving mercy?

It was just a normal day until she got to the well, around noon.  That's when she met a man who looked right into her very depths.  Rushing back into her village, she exclaimed, "Come see a man who told me everything I ever did!" And, they came streaming to see for themselves.

Has there ever been a person in your life whose words spoke life right into you?  Maybe it was an elementary school teacher who told you, “You’re very bright!”  If so, you probably haven’t forgotten it!  Words can be life-giving blessings: “Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body” says Proverbs 16:24.

It was a shocking story that gripped the nation. In 2002, 14-year-old Elizabeth Smart was abducted from her bed in the middle of the night in Salt Lake City, Utah. Nine months later she was recognized while walking down a street with her abductor.

Are you feeling broken-hearted today?  If so, you are not alone.  The human condition is one of heartbreak, because of the sin-broken world we live in and our own predisposition to breaking each other’s hearts.  “For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander,” which all add up to heartbreak.  (Matthew 15:19). But the Bible says that God is near to the brokenhearted (Psalms 34:18) and, even better, that Jesus came to release us from the bondage of our own hearts. Here is what is called the good news:

Living in a world with sin and evil means we experience pain. The Bible says, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” (Jeremiah 17:9 KJV). Deceitful, wicked hearts produce evil actions and followers of Jesus often feel the effects of those actions too. The fact that Satan has some power on Earth (2 Corinthians 4:4) contributes to an atmosphere of suffering. Sometimes our pain is a result of our own sin. At other times, we are pained because we did nothing wrong, but still suffer because of the sins of others. The latter can feel unjust and surprising.
