God Isn't Interested in Your Spirituality

Sometimes, even what seem like good things can become barriers to the deeper work God wants to do in our lives.

Bonnie Sala: Do you know someone who hides behind their faith to judge others? I'm Bonnie Sala with Reset. Maybe you know someone like John. John uses his faith to justify his judgmental attitude toward others. When he calls out the flaws of others, he believes his behavior is godly even though his co-workers and family see him as unsafe and condescending.

In reality, John is using his spiritual life as a shield to avoid the growth God desires in him. When another relationship falls apart, John misapplies Bible verses. "Of course that person hates me. All those who desire to be godly suffer persecution." True surrender to God's conviction transforms us. It starts with humility and leads to a life increasingly marked by what the Bible calls the fruits of the Spirit.

When God's Spirit controls us, the fruit or results we see Him working in our lives are demonstrations of love, kindness, and gentleness. God once spoke through one of His prophets, Samuel, saying, "Obedience is better than sacrifice." God evaluates our hearts' surrender to Him in authentic obedience far more than our outward appearances of spirituality.

Sometimes even good things can become barriers to the deeper work God wants to do in our lives. When we use religious activity to escape pain, avoid hard conversations, or side-step God's conviction, we risk missing the transformation He desires for us. Are you avoiding something hard that God's asking you to do?

Maybe it's seeking therapy to heal old wounds, practicing patience in traffic, or owning up to mistakes in a relationship. God wants more than a spiritual you. He wants transformation and wholeness for you today. I'm Bonnie Sala. Ready to grow your faith? Discover practical tools and more at guidelines.org.
