Faith That Shows Up
Faith was never meant to stay inside a church building. Discover how ordinary acts of love can make God’s presence visible to the people around you.
Bonnie Sala: What if the most powerful sermon your community ever hears isn't preached in a church but lived out in front of them? I'm Bonnie Sala with Reset. When flooding devastated a neighborhood on the outskirts of the city, one local church didn't wait for an organization to respond. They showed up the next morning with food and hands to help.
Church members decided that faith required something more of them than just going to a Sunday service. Their neighbors noticed. It's easy to reduce faith to what happens inside a building—songs, sermons, or prayers. But a faith that only lives inside a building isn't the faith Jesus described.
James, the brother of Jesus, said things plainly. He wrote, "What good is it, dear brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but don't show it by your actions? Suppose you see a brother or sister who has no food or clothing, and you say, 'Have a good day, stay warm and eat well,' but then you don't give that person any food or clothing. What good does that do?"
Faith, James insists, is visible and shows up practically. The people it shows up for are rarely far away. Think of the elderly neighbor managing alone, or the single mother carrying more than anyone knows. Think about your chronically ill friend.
People are not projects. Each person is beloved by God. The church that showed up after the flooding didn't save the neighborhood, but they showed the neighborhood what God looks like when he moves through ordinary, willing people.
Scripture puts it like this: "Let's not merely say that we love each other, let us show the truth by our actions." God doesn't need impressive people; he needs willing ones. Starting this week, that could be you. I'm Bonnie Sala. Ready to grow your faith? Discover practical tools and more at guidelines.org.
