Are You Hiding from God?

January 15, 2021

One of the best things about God’s Word is that it tells us about real people with real flaws and shows how God deals with them. Take Saul, for example. The tallest and most handsome man in Israel, the Bible says that God called him to be Israel’s first king. (1 Samuel 10:9)

Love does not discriminate by age; it can suck each of us into a sweet, chaotic irrationality. Yet lasting love involves repeated choices. True love is hard, drawn- out work. Jesus recognized this, saying, “Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples” (John 13:35 NLT).

Do you know the difference between guilt and shame? Guilt is a feeling of responsibility and remorse while shame is a feeling of humiliation. Guilt is appropriate at times, but shame can lead us away from community with others and into twisted ideas of our worth.

Do you plan your days, entering appointments and goals on your phone or paper calendar? If you’re not a planner, you probably feel that you should be. Plans equal preparedness, right? Well, not always. Something like a pandemic, for example, makes us question whether tomorrow will even arrive. We realize we’re not as in control as we thought we were.

When a friend is hurting, we wish we could make it stop. We cannot fix most situations, and we often end up doing one of two things.  Either we avoid talking about the pain because we feel helpless, or we resort to statements of questionable certainty like, “there is a good reason for this” or “everything will be okay.” Those things might be true, but they are rarely comforting.

Walk the streets of any major city and you will see the same styles of clothing, hear the same music and watch people glued to their phones on many of the same social media platforms.  But, by the standards of His day Jesus Christ was a non‑conformist who did not fit in with the crowd.  He disregarded traditions and social customs if they were out of keeping with the revealed Word of God.  He was willing to stand alone from the crowd, yet it was not His clothes that made Him different.  In fact, there is no evidence whatsoever that suggests His clothes or hair made Him stand out in the least from His peers.  It was His life, His complete honesty, His soul‑penetrating insight into the lives of those who encountered Him.

The Bible teaches us that our pain is not a waste. It’s not only not a waste, but it will result in something wonderful. “Our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all,” the Bible says (2 Corinthians 4:17).  Now, our troubles do not always feel light or momentary, but when we understand eternal glory, they certainly seem more manageable. The reward, eternal glory, is being in the presence of God forever. Our suffering on Earth brings us daily closer to that glory. “Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day” says (2 Corinthians 4:16).

Do you ever pray aloud with other people? Unity and encouragement are two benefits of praying with, and for, others. When we pray with a friend (or even someone we just met) we invite one another into a conversation with God about our most honest thoughts and feelings.

The Bible sets a high standard for the way followers of Jesus interact with others. Always be humble and gentle. Make allowance for others’ faults. But what about that one family member? What about people on the internet? What about your unreasonable boss? Or noisy neighbor?
