Loving Your Enemies, C

January 15, 2015

The concept of “loving your enemies” is often viewed as a New Testament idea. Yet in chapter twenty four of first Samuel, David -- despite his flaws -- gives us a good example of one kind of godly behavior: not repaying evil with evil.

References: 1 Samuel 24

Daze Of Deception
Jesus warned that deception would grow worse as we draw nearer to the end times, saying, “Take heed that no one deceives you” (Matthew 24:4). Distinguishing truth from error has become increasingly challenging—even in the church. We live in a time when falsehoods assault us from every direction. Packaged with just enough truth to make them appear trustworthy, these counterfeits have grown more and more difficult to detect and avoid. Living in the Daze of Deception explores the many ways error is masquerading as truth—and you’ll learn how you can discern the difference.

Weʼre in a mini-series taken from chapter twenty three of 1 Samuel, which tells of two “apparently” unrelated accounts. Weʼve already looked at both, including another one of Saulʼs pursuits of David, which was unsuccessful. The first part of the chapter, however, tells us of how David and his men rescued Keilah.

On today's edition of Real Radio, Pastor Jack continues in his verse-by-verse series through the Old Testament book of first Samuel. We’re now in chapter twenty three, which really reveals two apparently unrelated accounts: David’s rescue of Keilah,* a city in the western foothills of Judah. Then, half way through the chapter we’re told of another one of Saul’s pursuits of David. This guy just won’t give up, even though Saul’s son, Jonathan, was loyal to David!

We’re now in chapter twenty two of 1st Samuel. And much of this part of the narrative reveals Saul’s jealousy of David. David was not even king yet, but still had men who appeared to be loyal to him. As the story continues to unfold, we see that this is yet another valuable lesson -- and demonstration -- of spiritual warfare.
