From Home To Rome - C

February 12, 2019

Paul lived and died the same message, to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them, and through the power of the Holy Spirit, teaching all that the Lord commands. Paul fought the good fight and kept the faith. And, in the end, was beheaded for being a Christian in April 67 AD as declared by the Emperor Nero. But, laid up for him in Heaven is a crown of righteousness, and not only for him, but for all who have loved our Lord, Jesus Christ, and look forward to His coming!

Daze Of Deception
Jesus warned that deception would grow worse as we draw nearer to the end times, saying, “Take heed that no one deceives you” (Matthew 24:4). Distinguishing truth from error has become increasingly challenging—even in the church. We live in a time when falsehoods assault us from every direction. Packaged with just enough truth to make them appear trustworthy, these counterfeits have grown more and more difficult to detect and avoid. Living in the Daze of Deception explores the many ways error is masquerading as truth—and you’ll learn how you can discern the difference.

Paul had a great reception in Rome, from the other believers there, and it greatly encouraged him. And, it’s from Rome, chained to a guard where he would write the New Testament books of Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, Philemon, I & II Timothy, and Titus. Paul, the greatest opponent against Christianity, became its greatest promoter to have ever lived.

God saw Paul through to the end. And, the commitment God made to Paul is the same He makes for us. God will see us through to the end of our journey in life. And, like Paul, it’s not about how much we do for the sake of the Gospel, but our motive behind it. Without love, and without the encouragement of other believers, we won’t be able to overcome the difficult challenges of being a Christ follower.

God often uses a crisis to glorify His name. The ship Paul and the crew sailed on was destroyed. But, the stability of Paul kept him in control, and full of peace. The Islanders on Malta were pagan, and worshipped the Goddess Nemesis, but God had a plan in store to enlighten their beliefs.

Paul’s walk and the words he preached, were exactly the same. If we’re going to paint a picture of God’s love to the world, our lifestyle cannot reflect a God that’s not in control, or out of touch. Paul’s life was effective because he listened to God, believed it, lived it, and shared it with others.

The men on board the ship with Paul have now been stripped of all they had trusted in. Most of the cargo has been thrown overboard. We can live without food and water for a time, but we can’t live without hope, even for a moment.

We’re often caught up in wishful thinking. But, the majority vote on how things look means nothing to God. While on board the ship sailing for Rome, Paul warned the others that the storm would cause trouble ahead, and the cargo would be lost. But, Paul’s advice he received from God to harbor the ship for the winter, was ignored by the others, with disastrous results.

We are all travelers, and we will all have trouble and difficulties along the way. But, God has a reason for our journey. His desire is for His truth is to be worked out in our lives. We are precious to Him, and He is more concerned for us, as messengers of the Gospel, than the message itself.

What is most interesting about Paul’s defense, is that King Agrippa, wanted to set him free. He didn’t find enough fault in him worthy of death. But, Paul had already made the appeal to be tried in Rome. God had planned for him to go to Rome, and going in chains was the only way to do it.

On today’s program, Pastor Jack encourages us to ask ourselves if we really are a Christian, and has believing in Jesus Christ really changed us. Like Paul, we need to give an answer for our faith in Christ. Jesus taught by example, not just by talking about it. We must be convinced ourselves, that what the scriptures say is true, and what Jesus did for us was real.

Knowing God builds within us an assurance for living life. Paul’s power to share came from knowing God. Paul’s confidence was from the Word of God, and Paul’s peace came from being in the will of God. Paul knew who and what he believed in, and that was how he was able to give his defense.
