Being Right with God - 2C

April 8, 2019

Isaiah warns us against being wise in our own eyes. Where no other opinions matter, and we take away goodness and justice for our own gain. This kind of behavior angers the Lord, and causes Him to raise His hand in judgement. As a result, the people of Israel are carried away by their enemies, that they might repent and turn from their evil ways.

Daze Of Deception
Jesus warned that deception would grow worse as we draw nearer to the end times, saying, “Take heed that no one deceives you” (Matthew 24:4). Distinguishing truth from error has become increasingly challenging—even in the church. We live in a time when falsehoods assault us from every direction. Packaged with just enough truth to make them appear trustworthy, these counterfeits have grown more and more difficult to detect and avoid. Living in the Daze of Deception explores the many ways error is masquerading as truth—and you’ll learn how you can discern the difference.

Isaiah warns against carelessness, thinking you can do whatever you want, and God will excuse you. This deception is calling evil good and good evil. And, like our culture today, the people of Israel rewrote God’s code of morality. But, God will not be mocked and so He lifted His hand of protection from them.

Isaiah warns the people about being drunk with wine, and how in their self-centeredness they have no regard for God and His good deeds. And, by having no respect for themselves, they’ve caused many to stumble. So, God sends them into exile, where the wealthy will die of hunger, and the common people will be parched from thirst.

Stealing is born out of wanting what you do not own. There is also a sense of violation that is put in us when we’ve been stolen from. And, Isaiah in his poem is saying that the wealthy of Israel are guilty of hoarding to the point where there is no space for others to live in the land.

God has expectations of a good harvest. And, Jesus told us throughout His ministry, that there will come a day when we will stand alone before the Lord, and give an account of what we’ve done with what God has given us. And, Isaiah in His poem points out six sins, or woes, and each of their judgements.

Isaiah is now called by God to deliver a message in the form of a Poem, but not just any kind of a poem – it’s a Parabolic poem. It is a parable about a vineyard. And, this vineyard is the nation of Israel, and the people of Judah are the vines. God did everything He could to make it beautiful, plentiful, and safe. God did His part, and wanted Israel to do the same.

God has given us the ministry of reconciliation. We cannot do it on our own, but through God’s love we can restore others, knowing that we too can fall away. And as it says in Isaiah chapter 4, the Lord wants to cleanse us, and be our refuge and our hiding place from the storm and rain.

The Bible warns us in numerous places to follow after God, so that your name remains in the Book of Life. There is a Book of Life, and a Lamb’s Book of Life. Everyone’s name is in the Book of Life. But, when you accept Christ as your Savior, your name is added to the Lamb’s Book of life. But, if you choose not to follow Christ, your name will also be blotted out of the Book of Life.

Nations continue to rise against Israel. But, God’s covenant towards Israel is everlasting. And, Jesus who Isaiah foretold as the Branch of God, was like a tree cut down, but regrew, and produced many trees. And, the destruction of Israel that Isaiah predicted, will once again increase into a great people, respected by other nations.

God is very patient, and longsuffering. He is a God of mercy, and it’s His will that we thrive. He is there to give us a future and a hope. That’s why God corrects those He loves. It’s not to punish us, but to give us the opportunity to turn and repent from chasing after our own pleasures and desires, which can ultimately be our undoing.

God will leave us to ourselves, when in our rebellion, we continue time and again to allow our disobedience to override our wisdom. And, soon our hearts are hardened to the point where God removes His hand of protection, and those things we hold onto that are precious to us, are taken away.
