The Helpless Parent's Prayer

March 17, 2016
You can bet it was just a matter of time before that couple got caught!
There's nothing more frustrating to parents than suspecting that their child is being sneaky, but never finding the child out.  If you find yourself in that boat, I have two suggestions for you.  (and if you're not in that boat yet, trust me, someday you will be!)
1)  Pray the prayer of the helpless parent.  Say, "Lord, HELP!"  I believe God truly delights in hearing us call out to him in desperation.  Ask Him to cause your child to be caught if he or she is doing something wrong.
2)  Pray that in the presence of your child…so that your child hears you.  Even a hardened, deceptive heart can be softened by some fear of the Lord.
One final thought.  Guard against being deceitful yourself.  Be honest with your child, even if you're sure you're being lied to.

I'll say!If your spouse is addicted to alcohol, there are some things you can do.First, seek godly counsel.  Go to familylife.com and do a search on our website for the word "counselor."   Then read the article called "How to Choose a Christian Counselor."  There are additional resources available at familylife.com, too.Second, be sure you're attending a strong, God-fearing, Bible-teaching church, a church that teaches and practices Biblical church discipline.  Surround yourself with supportive, loving followers of Jesus Christ. And third, pray.  Pray for your spouse, and pray for yourself as you help him or her bring beauty out of ashes. One final thought.  That website again is www.familylife.com.  Hear me loud and clear: Alcohol abuse does not have to ruin your marriage and family.I'm Dennis Rainey, and that's Real FamilyLife.

Now there's a recipe for adultery!  I want to remind you of something.  Before this man ever had a physical affair, it started out as an emotional affair.  Little by little, he allowed his loyalties to his wife to errode, and his affections for her began to wander.Which is why it's critical that all of us guard against inappropriate conversations and emotional transparency with the opposite sex in the workplace.  Most husbands and wives are separate from each other for at least nine hours a day.  Now that's a huge chunk of time! One final thought.  Why don't you go on the offensive?  Invest in your husband or wife.  Nurture your affection and protect your marriage from harm.  You can choose today to say, "No," to an emotional affair and say, "Yes!" to your marriage.I'm Dennis Rainey, and that's Real, FAITHFUL, FamilyLife.

Every year during my childhood, right about this time of year, my mom would reenact the grueling ritual of spring housecleaning.  She took it very seriously!  Like a soldier on a search-and-destroy mission, she methodically probed every corner and closet.  After days of backbreaking labor, the house was sparkling clean, and it felt great.Just as houses need cleaning, sometimes we need to do spiritual housecleaning as well.  Spiritual housecleaning begins with Godly introspection, and that should lead us to repentance.  The fruit of repentance is often times spouses forgiving each other, and discovering a fresh joy, hope, and oneness in their relationship.  One final thought.  Repentance shouldn't just happen once a year -- like spring housecleaning.  Make it part of your daily life, and your relationship with God and your family will flourish.I'm Dennis Rainey, and that's real, clean Family Life.
