Relationships, Marriage, and Family - Volume 4 - Part 4

Guest (Male): Thanks for joining us for today's Power Walk Ministries broadcast with Pastor Paul Cannings. Our current series is titled Relationships, Marriage, and Family. Pastor Cannings urges us to understand the importance of God's word and its application to our everyday lives.

When we take God's word seriously, our lives can be transformed, and that is so evident in the area of relationships in our lives. God provides clear direction for us, and in spite of the challenges we face, we can be anchored in Him. Encouraging us to heed God's instruction for our homes, here's Pastor Cannings with part two of the message, Headship in the Home.

Dr. Paul Cannings: The man sets the agenda in the home. So he's the covering in the home. That's why he's the first at the door. My kids grew up seeing me saying, "You guys go in the bedroom, I'll check the doors, the windows. I believe God will protect me. He gave me a house. I'm going to take our money and we're going to do the best we can to get you in the best neighborhood possible to get a better situation possible."

If it means I wear the same suit, drive the same raggedy car I had, it doesn't matter. I'll check the house. I am the protector. If anything goes wrong, I'm first at the door. You've got to come through me. As a man, you protect, you cover, and you fight for unity through spiritual growth. Look at chapter four.

This mode, in what we call mode in the Greek text, is in the nominative. What does that mean? Nominative mode in Greek means this is the subject of the entire conversation I've been talking about. You should pay attention to this because this is what's important to me.

In other words, I can't be to Earth what I need to be to Earth if I can't find a good marriage. I made Adam and Eve first because that's My breath to the world. So if you stop being this, the world breathes death, and that's what we are seeing.

We keep blaming Democrats, Republicans, and the Bible is going, "No, no, no, no, no. It's you not taking My structure seriously." Malachi chapter four, verse six says, "I will curse the Earth." You pastors walking around not taking care of your kids by building the knowledge into your home, I'll curse your kids.

That's why I ran from pastoring. Ask Tony Evans, I didn't want to pastor. He was shocked when I told him I was because I didn't want to do that. God ain't cursing my kids because I messed up. I love my kids way too much. That was one verse that kept me running until I decided I'm going to fix that. I will never run from knowledge, I'd always be willing to grow.

In chapter four, it wasn't first for me, it's because I wanted my kids to be what they need to be. I was passionate about it. Look at chapter four. We need to have families better. We've got kids that are just messed up. Sometimes I see kids in my office and the stuff they tell me they've gone through blows my mind.

It's because we're not willing to learn this and to submit to it. We always want to bring up our past and what happened. Something has to become Lord, and if it's going to be your past all the time, then Christ doesn't have a way in. You've got to come to a point in your time where you die to yourself. If you don't die to yourself, you can't breathe God.

At some point in time in your life, you have to say, "You know what? What I'm thinking is different from what God is thinking. I'm a dead man. Forget the thought. Let me go this way." At some point in your life, you have to come there because one day you're going to meet God, and guess what He's going to do? Bring up the same Bible you ignored.

In Proverbs 13:13, He says, "You could ignore the Bible, but that don't mean you ain't going to be accountable to it." I can ignore the cop, but it don't mean he can't stop me. In Ephesians chapter four, he says this, a man's headship leads to unity. Look at verse five. Verse four wouldn't hurt you. "There is one body, one spirit, just as you also were called into one hope of your calling. One Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all who is over all, through all, in all."

And to each one of us, grace, we're going to mess up sometimes, was given according to the measure of Christ's gift. Before he ever gets to unity in verse 13, he's saying, "You've got to let Me breathe into you." Got to let Me breathe into you. And when I breathe into you and you function based on your roles, everybody's got a gift.

What is the woman? The woman, the Bible says, is the body. Well, what is in the body? Gifts. So if I can just get the man and the woman to function within their gifts, I could arrive with unity because what is giving those gifts is one Spirit, one Christ, one God.

But if you keep fighting your roles, I can't breathe peace in the house, I can't breathe into the house because I can't get past you all fighting for your rights. Fight for My rights, I must be about My Father's business. Fight for what I'm saying to you and I'll bless you.

When would I stop loving you? When would I stop caring for you? When would I stop watching over you? I am God, I'm always good, I'm always right, I'm always loving, I'm always graceful. I can't be something I'm not, so I'm always going to be honest with you.

So that's why in chapter five, he continues headship this way. He says a man must wash his wife with the word. Okay, must wash his wife with the word. As a matter of fact, headship, he's the savior of the body. Let me give you these four points about savior real quick. Four points about savior of the body.

In other words, the man is not just a covering driving the spirit into the house, he also saves the body. How does he save a woman's body, his children's body? Let me give you the list because if you don't save it, he says Satan comes in. He is the enemy. Look at chapter three first. This is your enemy right here.

In verse nine of chapter three, he says, "And to bring to light what is the administration of the mystery which for the ages have been hidden in God, who created all things." In other words, Paul says, "I was studying God all day, but I could never get this."

In verse 10, he says, "So that the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known through the church to the rulers and authorities in heavenly places." Who's he talking about? Heavenly places, chapter six, that the rulers and authorities are coming from is Satan.

So the man's covering protects Satan from coming to his home. He came to kill, to steal, and destroy domestic violence. All kinds of stuff comes out. So how does this person save? Like I'm saying, these things you could see today when people walk away from destruction. You could see it today.

Look at what we have today. Angry kids, kids that are committing suicide, depression, drug abuse, alcohol abuse. We're seeing it. Watch this in savior of the body. Write these four things down. False doctrine. Chapter four, the man looks and says, "We ain't going to this church that teaches false doctrine."

Chapter four, in verse 14, is the trickery and craftiness of Satan. Verse 14, the man is supposed to head this home by keeping the doctrine in the home true. Not just going to church, but keeping the breath of God, His word, in the home. Look at verse 25. "Lay aside falsehood, speak truth."

Then he says, "Be angry but don't sin. You can get mad, but just don't sin. Don't start cussing and throwing stuff and wrath." He lists how bad it gets. Immorality, impurity, greed, verse three. Everybody's chasing money in the house. What is the money? The root of what? Evil.

He says stop being greedy. Stop in the home, this is how you protect your home from Satan. Look at chapter four, verse 17. He says stop letting people use common sense before they get the scriptures. But this makes sense to me. It ain't supposed to make sense to you first, what makes sense to God first?

When you make sense to God, then we can talk about how you use common sense to apply it. See, this is how when the man is saving the body, what is he doing? Washing his wife with the word. So if you're protecting from false doctrine, if you are coming into the home and you try to make sure that the home stays committed to truth.

Who's the truth? The Holy Spirit is the truth. So if you come into the home and you're saying, "Hey, in this house, we're not going to chase money, we're going to provide, we're going to make sure our budget is structured, we're going to function in a certain way, but we ain't chasing money and we don't get to loving money and that don't become evil."

So the Bible is literally saying that when a man is saving the body, he's washing the wife. Well, how do you wash the body? You save it from evil by washing it. How do you keep saving it? Look at chapter six and verse four. "Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord."

What's he doing? He is washing the wife, teaching the kids. If he's washing the wife, teaching the kids, he is saving the home. Here's the big word. He then goes to the word submit. After he lays out the agenda for the husband, he says, "Come under him."

He didn't say obey, he says, "Forsake your will for my will." Submission is not, "Okay, my husband said it, okay, let me do it." That's not what he's saying. He is saying as unto the Lord. So when he comes to the man, he sets the agenda for the head, then he says to the wife, "Come under that agenda."

Because you've been under that agenda when you were a single woman following Me as the Lord. So now I'm telling you what the agenda is. Come under the agenda like you would have done to Christ, so My agenda for the house so I could breathe into the house is set. You're not coming under for him, you're coming under for Me.

Look at chapter five. The man must breathe wisdom into the house, verse 15. Then he says in verse 24, "As the church is subject to Christ, so also wives to their husbands in everything." Because the husband is Christ now, the husband is washing now, the husband is saving the body now, the husband is protecting the family now. Spiritual leadership in the home now. Just because all those things are happening, come under him in everything. That's what he's after, women. It's not just submit because I'm a wife. He says submit because I'm your Lord.
