God calls His people to be brave and to trust Him. When we don’t, the result is never good.

Colin Smith: When God's people came close to the promised land, fear gripped them. Taking the land would involve a military campaign, and military campaigns are always costly. What would happen to their children? "Why is the Lord bringing us into this land to fall by the sword?" they said. "Our wives and little ones will become prey."
God's people put their children first, and they held back from what God had clearly called them to do. And what was the result? Their children suffered. God's people spent the next 40 years in the desert, and their children, who could have grown up in the promised land, wandered in the wilderness.
When you come to a place in your life where obedience to God seems costly, remember that the alternative always comes at a higher price.

About Colin Smith
Colin Smith is senior pastor of The Orchard Evangelical Free Church, a thriving, multi-campus church located in the northwest suburbs of Chicago, and Founder and Teaching Pastor of Open the Bible.
Born and raised in Edinburgh, Scotland, he trained at the London School of Theology where he earned the degrees of Bachelor of Theology and Master of Philosophy. Before coming to the States in 1996, Colin served as senior pastor of the Enfield Evangelical Free Church in London.

Colin and his wife Karen reside in Arlington Heights, Ill., and have two married sons and five granddaughters.
