The Biblical Word “Atonement”
What is atonement and why is it necessary for reconciliation with God?
Guest (Male): Open the Bible with Colin Smith.
Colin Smith: God's people repented of their sin with the golden calf, and the next day Moses said to them, "You have sinned a great sin." I mean, talk about preaching to the choir. These people are sorry. Isn't it Moses's duty to tell them that they're forgiven? And isn't it God's duty to forgive them?
No, something else must happen before sins can be forgiven. Moses said, "I will go up to the Lord; perhaps I can make atonement for your sin." And atonement is what it takes to put right something that's wrong. Jesus came into the world to make atonement for our sins. He did this on the cross, and it's through faith in him that our sins are forgiven.
