When The Shepherd Takes Our Hand

August 10, 2008
Some people see God as distant and uninvolved. But one Psalm portrays God's care for His people as that of a shepherd for his sheep. King David wrote the beloved Psalm 23 to capture this care with a word-picture that has never been equaled. Later in our broadcast, Pastor Lutzer will take us to Psalm 23. His topic: "When the Shepherd Takes Our Hand."

Some say God created the world like a clock: He wound it up and is now letting it run down. But the Bible tells us otherwise. God is not indifferent to what's happening on planet earth...in the scriptures we see how engaged He really is. In fact, history is moving toward an inevitable conclusion: the return of Jesus to this earth.

Worship is not just an hour on Sunday morning. As we'll learn today, worship, for the Christian, needs to become a way of life. And we'll find that a life of worship involves a cost, because without that cost, our worship is not genuine. Today we conclude a series on worship, as Erwin Lutzer brings Part Two of "How to Adore God."

It was an unlikely place for a teaching on worship: a well along a dusty road. But here, Jesus taught a despised woman how to worship God. And today, He'll teach us. Today we begin a series on worship, as Pastor Erwin Lutzer brings Part One of "How to Adore God."

When we fail morally, we often sin further in trying to cover up our indiscretions. Israel's King David committed adultery with another man's wife, and then had him killed to hide the affair. Like many in this predicament, David felt crushing guilt...a guilt that only God could handle. Mercifully, David found restoration for his soul....just as we can today.

The history of ancient Israel is the story of a pattern repeated over and over: rebellion against God, judgment, repentance, and then back to rebellion. Many people have the same experience: after being delivered from destructive behavior they find themselves sinking back into the same sins. Is there a way out of the addictions that won't let go? To find out, stay with us.

Your past: it's a book filled with the record of mistakes you've made. Some people re-read that book every day, wishing they could undo what they see there. But we can't always fix our mistakes....the consequences endure. If you find yourself a prisoner of your past, stay with us, because today you'll hear how to get free.

How far would you go to find forgiveness for your past? In Jesus' day a prostitute broke social custom by pouring costly fragrant oil on Jesus to show her gratitude for the cleansing of her soul. Today: lessons from an immoral woman on finding wholeness from the hand and heart of the Savior.

One of the deepest connections we can forge with another person is made when we engage in sexual activity. In marriage, this is what God intends. But outside of marriage, forming these interpersonal ties can warp our ability to connect deeply with a lifetime mate. Today: why we must break these ties in order to be healed in our souls.

Falling into moral sin is easy, since all of us are driven by our desires, and then rationalize our behavior with our minds. We tell ourselves lies....and then we often begin to live a lie to cover up what we've done. The result is conflict: conflict within ourselves, and conflict that can ruin the lives of others as well as our own.

Any of us are capable of committing sexual sin. We are designed with desires that make this kind of sin easy to fall into. And when we do get mired in these sins, our souls take the brunt of the damage as in our shame we are estranged from others, and most importantly, estranged from God.
