A Safe Harbor in a Dangerous World Part 2

April 30, 2020

Most of us were trained by our parents to say thank-you when a person does something kind to us, and that’s a good practice many of us have carried into adulthood.  However, when it comes to our relationship with God, oftentimes we fail to say thanks and praise God, and yet He is most worthy of receiving of it.  So today on Light on the Hill we’ll be encouraged to do that as we take a look at Psalm 92... a Psalm that is full of praise and thanksgiving to God.

There’s no debating the fact that we live in a dangerous and crazy world!  From viruses that have people on edge, to mass shootings.  But the Christian has a safe place to run to in the midst of the chaos.  Today on Light on the Hill, we turn to a Psalm that is really helpful for these days of uncertainty and danger.

When we think about the Psalms, we usually identify them with King David. He did write a significant portion of the Psalms, but not all of them. The author of Psalm ninety is another man you’re no doubt familiar with, Moses. It’s not only the oldest Psalm, but those of you who are into science will surely appreciate what it has to say.  Join us there today.

Today we’ll again open our Bibles to the book of Psalms.  And in Psalm 86 we find an individual crying out for mercy.  That’s something we all need to do.  So let’s be encouraged to follow David’s lead here as we look at his prayer with pastor James Kaddis.

If you’re a Christian, I’m sure you have a desire to be close to the Lord.  But maybe you feel at times like He’s a mile away!  What is the best way to stay close to Him?  We’re about to find out on Light on the Hill through a study in Psalm 86.  Here we find a beautiful prayer of David.

Have you ever read a verse in the Bible and thought it was saying one thing, but then when you consider the context, you arrive at a totally different interpretation!  We’ll see a good number of people today arrive at a wrong conclusion after reading just one verse in Psalm 82!  And we’ll see just how dangerous it can be, when you take a word or phrase out of context, and run with it, not taking the time to uncover what the author was meaning to convey.

Today we’ll be paying a visit to Psalm 81.  The Word of God is truly special.  It can inspire and minister to us in so many ways.  An example of that is how it inspires us to worship and seek the Lord.  We see that in this Psalm.

If you’re one of those that loves to study history, you’ll no doubt agree with this statement:  The same mistakes are repeated over and over again!  The Lord knows we have this tendency.  Today on Light on the Hill we pay a visit to Psalm 78, which essentially is a review of Israel’s history.  This was given so the younger generation wouldn’t repeat the same mistakes of those who walked before them.  And encourages us to pass on the mighty works God has done, to the next generation.

Would this be described as a difficult time for you?  Maybe you’ve even been fighting and arguing with God about it? The Psalmist we’ll meet up with today on Light on the Hill was certainly overwhelmed, and at rock bottom in every way imaginable.  Often at those times, our focus is on ourselves and the circumstances surrounding us.  But pastor James Kaddis will show us the importance of lifting our eyes up to God.

Have you ever had someone question the goodness of God by saying something like, “If God is so good, why is the world so bad?  And why do the wicked prosper, and good people suffer?”  We'll talk about that, today on Light on the Hill. We’ll spend most of our time together in Psalm 73.

We continue through the Psalms with pastor James Kaddis today.  We left off in chapter 71.  David was no stranger to trouble and heartache in his life.  But he showed no signs of letting up in his trust and praise of the Lord.  Through the storm he depended on God to protect him.  Those are wonderful footsteps to follow in, as we too might be faced with similar situations.
