1 Corinthians 9 Part 2

October 16, 2019

Everyone knows that athletes must subject themselves to physical training in order to prepare their bodies to be successful in their chosen sport. As we’re about to see in our study of First Corinthians chapter nine, the apostle Paul uses this as an illustration to explain that the Christian life requires hard work and discipline.

Here in America we focus a great deal on our rights and freedoms.  But as we’ll see today on Light on the Hill sometimes as ministers of Jesus we’ll need to give up some of our rights and liberties for very good reason.  Pastor James Kaddis has us consider First Corinthians chapter nine and a time when the apostle Paul gave up his rights as an apostle for the sake of his fruitfulness and effectiveness in the ministry.

We have great liberty in Christ, but does that mean anything goes? Maybe you’ve heard some of your friends excuse their wrong behavior, thinking that’s the case.  Our salvation is a free gift from God and isn’t obtained by works or legalistic rules. However, as we'll learn today, Christian freedom and Christian responsibility go hand in hand.

Maybe you’ve noticed God gives some people convictions that He doesn’t give to others.  Where we can run into trouble is when we expect others to hold the same convictions that we have, regardless of what the Lord has placed in their heart. Today on Light on the Hill we’ll be considering that very thing.

If you’re married I’m sure you could attest to the fact that there are responsibilities the married face, that the single doesn’t have.  The single man or woman in the Lord has more opportunities to freely serve too. Consider God’s plan for your life as you join us in First Corinthians seven.  He may be calling you to a life of singleness.

As sexual immorality is on the rise, we need to be reminded now more than ever what God has to say about sexual intimacy.  He created it to be enjoyed within the marriage relationship.  With that said, the Lord also gives some a gift of celibacy and calls them to remain single for a lifetime.  Join us in First Corinthians seven now for a very helpful study applicable to all from pastor James Kaddis.

As believers we have daily choices and decisions to make and at times we can think of a chapter and verse that tells us exactly what to do.  But there are also certain things that would fall in the bucket of our Christian liberties.  As we’ll discover today that doesn’t necessarily mean we should do it.  Before Paul the apostle would exercise a liberty he would put it through a grid.  Pastor James Kaddis will draw our attention to that to help us arrive at the very best decisions in life.

When we’re wronged by someone or our rights are violated we might be tempted to take it into the legal system. And in the world as we know it, that’s the route that people often take. But should Christians sue other Christians?  Today on Light on the Hill that very question is raised.

Have you ever had to confront someone who was clearly in the wrong?  Few of us actually look forward to doing that, and many shy away from it.   But it’s important to tell a person what they need to hear, especially when they’re living in sin!  Even if it puts the relationship at risk.  Here on Light on the Hill pastor James Kaddis urges us to have a concern for holiness and a willingness to help others.

What do you do when you see someone in willful, deliberate sin?  If you’re like most you tend to stay out of it, thinking it’s none of your business.  But is that really loving?  Today on Light on the Hill we’ll see how God wants us to get involved in helping them out of that lifestyle.

Tolerance of sin is taking place today in many churches.  Today on Light on the Hill we’ll open First Corinthians five go against the tide, and take a stand for purity.
