“When Jesus said, ‘Go,’ they didn’t form a committee; they went.”

October 15, 2026

Steve Brown: When Jesus said go, they didn't form a committee, they went. Let's talk on Key Life.

Matthew: This is Key Life. We're here to let you know that because of what Jesus has done, God will never be angry at you again. Jerry Perry has been teaching us all this week. Jerry serves as pastor at Christian Family Worship Center House of Grace, and he's the author of The Making of a Blended Family.

Steve Brown: Thank you, Matthew. This has been a great week, Dr. Perry's.

Jerry Perry: Yes, sir.

Steve Brown: And I've learned a lot. You know, that happens all the time. I'm going to hang out with you more. I think I could I think I'd be a better Christian if I did that. We If you're just joining us, this is the last of this week's programs on the Gospel of Luke. And in our archives, you can find Dr. Perry's teaching on Matthew and Mark. And I trust that the next time we're going to go to the Gospel of John.

Jerry Perry: Yeah.

Steve Brown: Okay. So now we're looking at Luke, and we've seen so much good. Luke is the play in the third chapter. He's tempted in the wilderness. Jesus is fourth chapter. Jesus calls Peter to follow him. In the ninth chapter, Jesus feeds 5,000 people. And there's no McDonald's. In chapter nine is the transfiguration, but there's a commissioning, too.

Jerry Perry: Yeah.

Steve Brown: In Luke 24, and I'm going to start at the 44th verse, and then I want you to teach us some things from this.

Jerry Perry: Yeah.

Steve Brown: And he said unto them, these are the words which I spoke unto you while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning me. Then opening the the opening their understanding that they might understand the Scriptures, and said to them, thus it is written, and thus it behooved Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day, that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations starting in Jerusalem.

Jerry Perry: Man, I mentioned to you, Steve, that this is one of my favorite Scriptures, and I'm going to tell you why.

Steve Brown: All right.

Jerry Perry: This introduces grace to the disciples of what they are going to preach or what they should be preaching now that Jesus have risen from the grave. Let me give you some little history of this text. Jesus rose from the grave. He sits his disciples down, and he start explaining to them the Bible say he opens up their understanding

Steve Brown: Yeah.

Jerry Perry: so that they may understand the Scriptures. And and because they did not understand all of what Jesus was doing. So he gave them a crash course of everything he was teaching. Matthew's in this in this particular text talks about the exact same same setting. Matthew's write it like this. Go ye therefore, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Ghost. That's This is the same text that Jesus is doing. In In Mark, Mark say these signs shall follow them that believe. They shall cast out devils and and all of that.

So when Jesus is talking about this, Luke gives a more definitive and detail of what he's trying to share with the disciples again, why I like the book of Luke. And Luke comes back and says, then he opened up their understanding that they may understand the Scriptures, and that repentance and the remission of sin, the remitting of sin should be preached in his name. So when they get into Acts, Peter start preaching the name of Jesus.

Steve Brown: Yeah.

Jerry Perry: He's commissioned to do what Jesus told him to do in Luke. And that's where we get that Jesus have forgiven us of our past, our present, and our future sins because Jesus tell the disciples, tell them that their sins have been remitted. It is gone. It is done away with. And that's where the Gospel of Grace start preaching in the book of Acts.

Steve Brown: So we get the action in Mark and Matthew. We get the message in Luke in a solid and powerful way.

Jerry Perry: Yes. Yes. And then in Acts, you start seeing that message being preached on the day of Pentecost.

Steve Brown: Oh, that's so good. That is really good stuff. You know, you know, we sometimes forget, don't we?

Jerry Perry: Mhm.

Steve Brown: We we're we're into healing and praying for healing, and we're into institutions and building the church and baptism.

Jerry Perry: Yeah.

Steve Brown: But it's really about forgiveness.

Jerry Perry: Yes, it is. It That's the reason that he came is to forgive our sins and and to wash us clean and to put us back in the right relationship with God. We have been reconciled back to God. The whole Gospels is God Jesus fulfilling the law of the of the of of the of of what he says, the law of Moses and all of the prophets and all of the Psalms concerning him. He came to fulfill all of those things so that he could release grace on us so that you and I now can live in him without the performance.

Steve Brown: Oh, so good. You know, it says talks about repentance.

Jerry Perry: Mhm.

Steve Brown: We sometimes get that, you know, we see a guy walking down the street with a sign that says repent, or those that say turn or burn, if you don't change, you're going to hell kind of stuff. That's not what the Bible teaches.

Jerry Perry: No.

Steve Brown: The Bible teaches repentance. That's a Greek word, and it means to change your mind.

Jerry Perry: Yeah.

Steve Brown: And so and so when he says repentance so that people will change their mind, and that's when God has permission to work in our lives and to make us different. Repentance isn't change.

Jerry Perry: Mhm.

Steve Brown: It's the methodology whereby God, if he decides to do so, changes us.

Jerry Perry: Yeah. If you look at Acts, the second chapter, I mean the first chapter, when Peter is preaching on the day of Pentecost, it it falls and he and he's preaching this message about they say they are drunk, and he says we're not drunk as you suppose, and he preaches the Gospel.

Steve Brown: Yeah. Yeah.

Jerry Perry: Someone asked Peter a question. They say, men and brethren, what shall we do? And Peter says something incredible. He says, reap He says, the God that you the same Jesus whom you have crucified, God has made him both Lord and Christ. I need you to repent, change your thinking of who you think Jesus was. He was not a person that you should have crucified. He is the Messiah. He is the Savior. I need you to come into agreement with who Jesus is. That's repenting. I am changing my mind that he is not enemy. He is not He was not someone that should have been crucified.

He was the Messiah. So now I'm changing to accepting as the Messiah. I am repenting. I am going to be baptized so that I can show the world that I stand with Christ, and now I'm going to be filled with the Holy Spirit so that I can be one of his children. That what what what repentance was all about, a change of mind of who he was.

Steve Brown: Oh, man. You know, I had a book in my library written by a German theologian that was titled Repentance. And I never read it because I thought repentance, man, I had to change, and I tried that and had not been able to do it. And then when I realized what it was, what you just described, change started taking place in my life, and I didn't even see it. It wasn't the issue anymore. The issue was his grace and mercy.

Jerry Perry: It's the acceptance of who he is. It's the acceptance of I am I am turning to Jesus, and that means that I'm not looking at the world as being my source. I'm looking at Jesus as being my source. And when you see Jesus as the source of your strength, your life, everything that he is to you, that is repentance. You are changing from being the world looking at the worldview, and I am putting my eyes on Jesus. I am setting my I'm changing my mind. I'm changing the way that I view life, and I'm looking to Jesus who is the author and the finisher of my faith.

Steve Brown: You know, at the beginning of this study this week, you mentioned that Luke not only wrote the Gospel of Luke, but the book of Acts that you're quoting from and talking about. People always say I wish we go back to the early church. And I You know, I get that, but they don't realize that Luke tells us about the fights. I mean they they fight worse than Calvinists and Baptists. And and and even their leaders couldn't work with each other. So that's now what we go back to. What we go back to is the central message of Luke and Acts.

Jerry Perry: Yeah.

Steve Brown: And it is we're forgiven.

Jerry Perry: Yes, sir. And it is the Gospel. It is the Gospel. And when you realize that you have been forgiven, he that is forgiven much loves much.

Steve Brown: And the more you're forgiven, the more you love.

Jerry Perry: The more you love and the more you forgive others when you realize what God has done for you.

Steve Brown: Oh, man. That's so true.

Jerry Perry: You know, we still have another 50 minutes 50 seconds. You want to sing a hymn or we're going to have a an altar call or something?

Steve Brown: I The only thing that I says is as Luke have wrote, hey, as God has forgiven you, you forgive others because his grace is sufficient for your life.

Jerry Perry: Oh, that's so true. So now you know about Luke, and you knew about Mark, and you knew about Matthew. And they speak with one voice to our hearts. And that voice is it's Jesus. It really is. Run to him, and he won't be angry. Hey, you think about that. Amen.

Matthew: Thank you, Steve and Jerry. With that, we put a ribbon on this week's special teaching series, a broad overview of Luke from someone who has traveled to a lot of the places where Luke actually traveled. Tomorrow, do join us for Friday Q&A when Steve and Pete will answer a very honest question about having enough faith. Hope you'll join us for that. So if I were to say the kindness of Jesus heals our sins, shame, and weakness, you might say, well, yeah, duh. But how does that process actually work? Ah, trickier question to answer. Well, we spoke about that recently with author Scott Sals on Steve Brown, etc.

It was an insightful conversation that I think will bring you a lot of hope and encouragement. If you want, we'll send you that whole episode on CD for free. Just call us right now at 1-800-KEY-LIFE. That's 1-800-539-5433. You can also email Steve at keylife.org to order that CD or to mail your request, go to keylife.org/contact to find our mailing addresses for the US and Canada. GOD’S NOT MAD AT YOU

Adapted from Steve’s new book, God’s Not Mad at You: Confronting the Lies of Guilt, Shame, Fear, and Regret. Topics include… Guilt, Shame, Fear, and Regret—what they are (good working definitions) and why we all (universally) struggle so much with them. / No Kickers—Kickers are the, often subtle, “small print,” the 1% lies that foster guilt, shame, fear, and regret. The Christian faith is unconditional in its promises and truths. God’s love, forgiveness, mercy, and grace have no kickers. / We Aren’t Good People (and They Aren’t Either)—It’s assumed that the key to unity in a family, church, or nation is for good people to convince or coerce bad people into being good…then we can walk off into the sunset together. But what if there aren’t any “good people,” just people who clean up better than others? When the church becomes a place of righteous indignation, it misses everything it’s supposed to be. / The Big Lie—the big lie is this, God is angry at you…with reason. Too often, we’ve truncated the Gospel. If you’re a Christian believer, God isn’t angry at you. (And, if you’re not a believer and go to him, he won’t be angry at you, either.) That makes all the difference in our struggle with guilt, shame, fear, and regret.
