Depression is like being caught in a deep pit of thick mud. Your feet are stuck in a dark hole with seemingly no hope of escape. But God is able to lift you from the pit of despair and out of the miry clay. Counseling and medication are key when it comes to addressing depression, but so are prayer and God’s Word. Turn to the Lord, the only one who can bring you ultimate hope and healing.

When your soul is downcast within you, do as the Psalmist does – remember the Lord. Nothing helps a heavy heart more than lifting your eyes Godward. As you call out to God for help and hope, the depression may not lift right away. But you can trust that he is listening, and he is going to help you.

The darkness and pain of depression or mental illness can feel hopeless and bleak. Christian friends who listen, pray for and walk beside those with mental illness are gifts from God. When you are struggling with depression or hopelessness, God often brings people into your life who’ve been there – fellow sufferers who have learned to cling to Christ and his promises. You are not meant to bear pain alone. Reach out to a friend, or even a biblical counselor, who can weep with you and point you to the God of all hope.
